Great effort by the Habs getting out of that 0-2 hole they created themselves. Played well the rest of the game.

From Peter TheBrown in The Athletic
Talks should pick up on Allen
My understanding is that there are teams who have let the Habs know that they’ll circle back on Jake Allen next month to kickstart potential trade discussions.
Montreal has had no issue continuing to carry three goalies into the holiday roster freeze, as it allows them to get more looks at youngster Cayden Primeau. Which is not nothing.
But it will be interesting over the next month to see if Carolina, New Jersey and Edmonton pick up the phone again, and I believe all three front offices have chatted at one point or another with the Canadiens since the start of the season, and there’s reason to believe there was a more recent conversation between the Hurricanes and Canadiens.
The Devils/Hurricanes situation alone is interesting because they’re both battling in the standings, two preseason Cup contenders who have had their goalie issues. I wonder if Montreal could play one against the other.
I think Carolina still hasn’t decided if it truly needs to trade for a goalie or if it can hang in there until Freddie Andersen potentially returns at some point from his blood clot issue. It’s going to depend on how things go over the next few weeks.
Devils executive Marty Brodeur is well-versed on Allen from their time together in St. Louis. But again, no clear indication if that’s a path the Devils will for sure follow.
One thing to remember with Allen is he’s not a rental player. He’s got another year on his deal at a $3.85 million cap hit (although it’s $3.3 million total in real cash next year). And he’s got a seven-team no-trade list. |

With Hamilton likely out for the rest of the season, the Devils have a lot of LTIR cap space... If they go for a goalie, then I see them getting a higher end goalie, unless they also want another D to minimize having the risk of both rookies Nemec and Hughes full-time in their top 6.

Matheson is more expendable than Savard imo.
I have to say, I was not much of a Savard fan, he really does stabilize the backend. |

Yup, he's an important part of that very young defense.
I think we need to keep both for the time being.
