Right so their 1st cup doesn't count
Pitt won lots of cups with suspect D.
St. Louis won with a (frank)ing rookie Binnigton.
There is no magic formula, the best thing you can do is build a team that makes the playoffs in as many years as possible. - Santo_44
More championship teams win with strong defence and goaltending than not. |

Teams that win the cup play well and get hot at the right time.
Hill was a journeyman goalie before his cup run.
Just build a good team, hold onto good players and try and win.

The incessant back and forth over the team's line up or poop D or questionable young G always fails to answer one question:
"Is this year's team good enough to go all the way???".
Some teams get lucky, ie: Montreal a few years ago, but let's not include that kind of playoff streak in this thought exercise. Too hard to quantify.
Is the Leafs current line up good enough to win?
For me, history tells me it is not. In fact, this team and the D/G is worse than the last couple of years.
So if it is not good enough, what do you do?
Will trading Nylander for a solid D and stuff put them closer? Don't think so. But if you can't resign him, he must not walk for free, bottom line. Especially if they're not good enough to go all the way this year. If there is a deal there at or before the TDL, you have to take it. Soooo many great D have changed teams over the last few years that should've and probably could've been on the Leafs, but alas, no Cap space.
If not the Willy situation, will Woll or Marty McFly Jones carry this team "as is" to the promise land? (frank) no.
The Leafs are not winning this year. Period.
Don't lose Willy for nothing cuz "we need him to win the Cup this year". Dumb.
A lot of Cap and player change could happen this summer. If done right, next year should be the year. IMHO. |

They won one cup with makeshift D that play their system perfect. But they had two hall of fame centers and quality goaltending.
St louis had a hot goalie, great D amd quality forwards.
There is a formula, spread your cap around, you need two of the three. Doesnt mean you always win as there will be other teams who have the same formula or parts of it. But most of the past cup winners have, some combination of great or quality forwards, big top end D (1 - 2 min) who play their systen and quality goaltending
You need balance. |

I’ll never forget the year that the outstanding goaltending of Jeff Glass pulled the weak Canadian Jrs (Crosby, Phaneuf, Weber, Bergeron, Jeff Carter, Ryan Getzlaf, Andrew Ladd, Corey Perry and Mike Richards) to a 7-0 record and gold. |

Every cup winning team is missing something, can't be perfect.
Build a good team and give your franchise as many shots at the cup as possible.
Don't make stupid trades for the sake of it. Easy. |

Exactly. Teams always lose right up until the time when they win. I'd be less hopeful if they'd won the Cup last year. They're due. |

Yeah, build a good team that includes goaltending and defence lol.
You miss 100% of the trades you don’t make.
Trade Nylander and Sammy for Geekie and Ingram.
The Leafs absolutely do not need Nylander to win games. I think it would do them good to play without him for a few games, not that he did anything wrong. Not that it’ll happen, but I think they’d learn to tighten up a bit.
That’s all they gotta do. Tighten up and take only worthwhile chances. |

So, you think they should scratch their leading points producer for a few games as a coaching tactic. I can't say I agree with your figurin' on that one, but it's different anyway!

Lmfao
No I don’t think that at all. FFS.
But I think they need a mindset reset and playing without Nylander for a couple games would make them see things differently. Obviously you don’t bench your leading scorer. It would be nice if Willy was a leader but he’s not. He’s quiet as a mouse and never does anything leader-like. He inspires I guess with his production. |

could be worse. Could have had a Czech mole score on own goal |

Some may not like it, but this is what peak logic looks like.
I've said it before and I stand by it - Leafs to the final four this year.

It's the Leafs. They will sign Nylander and next year will be rinse/repeat waiting for Tavares deal to end while we have utterly wasted 9 yrs of the greatest player this franchise has ever seen. I've been on this topic of needing to deal a core piece for YEARS on end... suddenly lots of people have this opinion...😵💫 |
