Hildeby is the smart move now. Trading for someone will cost assets and then you’ll lose him or Jones to waivers when Woll comes back. Now they can get a look at Hildeby and an even better look at Jones over the next month or so. If both flame out, then trade. Besides, having a goalie with a cool monster name always works out. - Canada Cup

My friend, I’m 61, I’ve been watching the Leafs for over 50 years…….my patience is thin. Anyways……for me, I realize things will open up a bit in the summer when contracts expire! However. We can’t seriously fund four $10mil forwards AND put in a decent D and goalie. Secondly, I think this team has shown that this isn’t a cup year so for me, be bold!! Trade for assets to set yourself up for a serious run another year. Trade Willie. TJ’s contract is up, trade him. Get some assets back in the cupboard for deadline moves, on a year when you have a chance. - Bullot

I told you I find it amusing. I have to be careful. I do not want you complaining to me over PMs then crying about it when I call you out about it.
I gotta admit you have come a long way. I mean you finally have a full time job, and no longer need to couch surf in Whistler banging snow cougars. - jribout

I bet you're a guy that unless it's a superstar like Matthews/bedard you'd rather sign "wily vets" all day instead of taking a chance on a young guy. Except you'd also point out to a young guy working out on another team as an example of someone the leafs should have drafted.
In reality this is how it goes. You get a guy, he turns out and you run with him. Lots of teams have had success with young goalies. Cam Ward in Carolina. More recently Binnington with the Blues. You can't just wait for everyone to be a 300 game vet and THEN rely on them. So what if he has less than 40 starts? His play is what counts.
Samsonov showed last season he was "meh" and yet you wanted him resigned and he's been Campbell garbage. I bet you were also one who thought Dubas should have guaranteed his starter in Campbell for the 5 million asking price at the time too. - Aaron_85
I’m not for vets, prefer young guys. (Would trade the Leafs roster for the Senators roster in a heartbeat) You do need some proven warriors to lead, be them young or old. Love Woll, but we can’t sit here and say when he gets back all will be good. Goalies like Ward and Binnington had WAY better D in front of them than Woll has! Seriously. And as for signing Sammy last summer…….I was hoping for an upgrade but you are never privy to who’s available and will come to your team! Sammy was servicable last year and Tree had his hands full with the way he came in, so Sammy at $3.5, in tandem with Woll was a civil decision at the time. Who was to know Sammy would completely fall apart. We have lots of good players, for me, it’s not a winning team recipe. Signing Willie just says to me, we are ok with being competitive, and that’s good enough. |

I don't care what they did last year or last 50 + years.
WhaT Matter is this year
There is a chance that Nylander gets moved but I think the Leafs keep him for the playoff and then let him walk.
people will be up in arms for not getting an asset for him |

Not me, its a chance they should take. I've been watching the Leafs for a minute or two. Can't think of a player they've had that was better than Matthews. Nylander is having an exceptional season - don't care why. Doubt very much he could be involved in a trade where the Leafs get the best player. Don't waste the opportunity making a foolish trade. I still think Leafs will re-sign Nylander.

There is another equation to look at as well. Teams like Tampa and Boston will take a strategic step back for one season, sometimes missing the playoffs, sometimes not. They'll save up cap space, get rid of bad contracts and get their core team set. Now is not the time to waste cap space or assets on an average goaltender to fill a hole for a month. Maybe this is the time for the Leafs to get their financial house in order and just go with what they have. Nylander should be dangled for young players and draft picks. Step back and fill your holes at the end of the season with all of the cap space that you accumulate. You may also have the ability to take on an expiring bad contract at the trade deadline and use it for your one season retool. The end of the year will come, playoffs or not. Since they have their first rounder this year, a middle of the pack pick might get you a good defenseman that you can hone in junior and the minors. Boston and Tampa have been masters of this strategy over the years. It's how Tampa got Victor Hedman and Boston ended up with Brandon Carlo.
With 3 NHL caliber defensemen and a couple of young goalies on entry level deals, this team really isn't going to do much. Dubas handed the Leafs a sh!t sandwich when he left, with overpaid core players coming up for new contracts. So far, this team with Keefe has wasted a fair amount of the core's productive years. Nylander and or Marner need to be moved and assets acquired and build around Austin Matthews. Tavares will also be coming up, after this season, for a new deal that would probably be in the $6M per on a 3 to 4 year deal. Money saved on cap could land you some very good free agents and a year from now, this team could be reconstituted under a new coach and a more palatable defensive system. We've had 6 years of this and it isn't getting better. Time to make the step back this year and trade Willy for assets. |

But the Leafs don’t have a lot of bad contracts they need to unload. Other than Matthews and Rielly there’s only about $5M on the books after next year. There’s money available. It just can’t be wasted in signings that don’t bring enough value, like Klingber or Bertuzzi.
I don’t see the point in moving out top tier players to build a new team around Matthews unless it’s quality out for quality in - a really good forward for an equally good D man. Trading for picks makes no sense. Marner and Nylander should not be moved unless you’ve given up on them or you get back players who can contribute at the same level. |
