Such a cowardly and classless move by Keefe to bench Kampf and sabotage his Ironman streak when the tender was mostly to blame on a single play, while the other softy "superstars" on the Leafs continue to not give a damn about defensive responsibilities.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are basically the antithesis of what Canadian hockey stands for.
There are just so many things to not like about the Leafs.

- JLO961

I agree. The play was a 2 on 3 and Samsonov was beaten on an outside shot to the long side. His positioning was off and the shot was along the ice. Keefe is a dope.

Hildeby is being brough in to back up Jones. Its the right move IMO. Whether he does well is yet to be determined, but I agree with the move.
- winsix

100% it is. I mean I wouldn't run the Beast and the Wall as the 1 and 2 this season. I'd allow Jones to back up Woll the rest of the way but for sure give the guy some time.

Jones is a vet. He knows his role and his abilities. He can handle the ups and downs of the games and media.

Their top 6 defensemen weren't All Star caliber but they were all good top 4 defenders. Todd Gill was probably the worst of them and he wasn't that bad. Gill = Brodie in today's game.

My friend, I’m 61, I’ve been watching the Leafs for over 50 years…….my patience is thin. Anyways……for me, I realize things will open up a bit in the summer when contracts expire! However. We can’t seriously fund four $10mil forwards AND put in a decent D and goalie. Secondly, I think this team has shown that this isn’t a cup year so for me, be bold!! Trade for assets to set yourself up for a serious run another year. Trade Willie. TJ’s contract is up, trade him. Get some assets back in the cupboard for deadline moves, on a year when you have a chance.
- Bullot

For a guy who admits to not having patience it's kind of hypocritical to also go "whelp not a cup year! Don't try for it and just waste another year of Matthews and pick another year to 'set up for a serious run'."

Like it's modern sports. It's difficult to win. You're not going to get a perfect storm for 82 games and also go 16 - 0 in the playoffs. Just dominate every night. Impossible.

All it takes in the year you 'set yourself up for a serious run' is an injury to Matthews or a couple guys and boom, you're done. injuries happen so easily so it isn't impossible and all you've done is put all the eggs into this one year. In which is also not a guarantee considering contracts, prospect development, bullpoop politics behind the scene, etc.

Leafs have Matthews. The leafs have never had a player of his actual calibre. Why (frank)ing waste a year when they are well within the running this year? Sure they can get another goalie to help or another dman in trades, it's possible but they can also do what Florida did and make it happen on their own. Stop being someone who thinks sports can be timed to have a "perfect" run.

You’re the one asked about a 40 goal guy versus a 25 goal. I don’t want to lose Nylander to get 3 years of a 25 goal goal scorer. As I said, if they can get a D man of equal value for Nylander, I’m open to it. But that kind of trade in-season is very unlikely. You can fill holes with all the $ coming off the books anyway.

Wrong guy. My premise is looking at a roster of players with 4 making too much money towards the Cap. Matthews is a Superstar, no and's or but's. Tavares has been overpaid, but still has one year left on his contract. He will settle for less or leave. I guess he stays. Marner has 1 more year at $11M. He too has yet to score 100 points and is overpaid. He does have a better defensive acumen than Nylander. He is one year younger. That leave Willy. Currently paid $7M on the cap but this ends this season. He's having a career year, but he probably will not get any better than he is now. He turns 28 after this season. He will demand Marner type money and would probably get it, elsewhere. The Leafs would be saddled with that contract until he turns 36. It's too much. The core 4 needs to be changed and Willy is the most likely candidate with an expiring contract. He hasn't signed yet and he probably won't, unless he gets overpaid. You could use him to be your own rental, but that's only on an expiring $7M contract. It's 11 going forward. Best thing to do is move him for draft picks and younger entry level players. There are teams that are playoff caliber with assets wanting to make a splash. You sacrifice this year to replenish your cupboard of future players. The Leafs have Cowan and Minten on the horizon within the next year or two. Where the Leafs fall down is no prospects in the system on defense. It's a must that they repair this defense going forward. What they have now is not playoff caliber. The forwards might get you there, but the defense will send you home quickly. The Leafs need to look big picture. This team is not good enough and it's just a repeat of the last 6 years. Something like Fast and the Furious 10. The early movies were great, the rest are living on past glory.

He's better than Lilijren, Legarsson, and any other stiffs not named Rielly, Brodie or McCabe on the Leafs. Leafs have an AHL bottom pairing every night.

Some of the trades that are suggested here remind me of Peter Chiarelli’s moves. Seguin and Hall ring a bell.

McCabe might be a pretty good comp for Gill. Early Gill was all energy ..hits, fights, jumped in the rush ...but tonnes of mistakes and injuries. Once Pat Burns got him and paired him with Ellett they were great.

Macoun and Lefebvre were the stoppers ..and very good at it.

Pat Burns made everyone look better though.

Sadly I agree, The Leafs need a retool and a way to spread out their cap money a little better. We have also seen for the last few years that this team is not constructed for the playoffs.. Dubas saw it at the end.

I disagree. he gave the puck up when he did not have a chance of success.
rag the puck a little longer and get the Matthews line out in the offensive zone
but he did not do that and the rest well is history.

So they run with him and still have the $7M to use to apply to whatever priorities most need addressing in the summer. I have never seen a realistic trade for Nylander that improves the team. And I don’t want to move him for picks and prospects that may or may not make a significant contribution in 3 or 4 years unless SJ or Chicago or someone trades their first which they obviously won’t.

I disagree with your Tavares statement. He's been at a point per game pace since he's been with the Leafs.
Hopefully if he remains a Leafs, he take a nice pay cut.
Nylander has been the best Leafs in the playoffs these past few year. so your own rental is an option

They don’t need to move Nylander in-season to have the flexibility to retool all they want. After next year they have Matthews, Rielly and $5M on the books.

Trade Willy for picks, prospects, or a top pairing Dman.

The last thing Tre would ever do is let him walk for nothing.
