Good point. If I was going to make a list of the most hated rivals in the NHL:
Edmonton-Calgary
NYR-NYI
Toronto-Montreal
Toronto-Boston
Toronto-Detroit
I'm not sure Boston-Montreal stands out above any of these others. - Cooleus
You forgot Colorado Detroit
Habs Nordiques
Both these make NY- NY look tame. |

Why cherry pick just the last 4 and not their whole playoff careers? we are after all talking about two guys that are only 2 years apart in age and in Jake's last playoff appearance he was over a goal per game (8 goals in 7 games). Nylander has never done that and Nylander has 7 playoff appearances to Jake's 6. Nylander has never scored more than 5 goals in one playoff season. - MattStrat
Because the last 4 years are a lot more relevant today than anything before that.
You don't trade for what a player did. You trade for what you think a player will do for your team once you acquire him.

Pretty sure Bos-Mon would be near the top of that list.

not a trade but a signing for the Leaf's Corey Perry!
Put Bert and Perry both on the same line. Add Gregor with his size and speed. New third line

Just a reminder Ek that we are in the 2023-2024 season and not 2022-2023. He was healthy all season long so keep this narrative for when he will get injured (doubt it happens this year). |

Last four playoff performances from Nylander versus Guentzel:
Nylander- 30 games 14 goals 29 points. Guentzel- 21 games 11 goals 16 points.
Guentzel has been either great or a ghost in the playoffs. Nylander has been a more consistent postseason performer even if his highs aren't so strong. - jfkst1
Then there is the 1 omission
21pts in 25ganes won a cup.
That is a pretty good high. No? |

Nylander has never played more than 11 games in a postseason. Why cherry pick that data? - jfkst1
Fits the narrative better duh 😂👍 |

Nope. You pay 11.5m for points not results & HOPE you’re right. If that works McD would have many cups. Kane & Toews don’t get 10m each. Doughty & Kopitar don’t get paid.
Everybody knows it’s not what you did it’s all about what you might do. That’s smart business ask anyone. |

I wasn't cherry picking initially. I was looking at their career playoff performance. Not just a period of time in the middle of their careers to fit a narrative... a period of time that included Jake and the Pens being swept at the hands of the Trotz coached defensive juggernaut Isles... no one was scoring. |

It's about the current trending.
You certainly don't pay for what someone did 6 and 7 years ago.
(and they've already rewarded him - he signed his 6M contract after the two good playoff performances you mentioned.) |

The reality is that the penguins are a bubble team and i don't think they could win a long series against teams like the Rangers, Bruins or Carolina. I am also concerned that someone will offer jake north of $11M/yr. If he can get a contract like Nylander's, great for him but i don't want that offer to come from the penguins. If a team is going to offer a 1st round pick, a player and a prospect for jake, i would make that trade.
Vancouver would be a good partner. Both teams are against the cap so it has to be dollar for dollar. In coaches and front office, former pens include: prez of operations (Rutherford), GM Allvin, head coach Tocchet, asst coaches Mike Yeo and Sergei Gonchar (Yeo and Gonchar also played for the pens). For players: Cole, Friedman, Teddy, Lafferty and Desmith all played in Pgh. Vancouver also wants some defensive depth so i would expect POJ to also be in play. When he was the GM in Pgh, Rutherford traded for POJ and signed Jake to the contract he is on now.
How about POJ (825k) and Jake (6M) for a 2024 1st round pick, 2025 4th round pick, boeser (6.65M), and podkolzin. No salary retention. - i'mjustafan
This is not a good post.

Playofff bubble teams 1 point out are not selling their top players at the TDL. That’s their buy riding UFAs and solving it off season.
Now as for Monohan yes he will be sold. The bidding is already happening among many teams. |

Jake wasn't in the playoffs last season and the season before last had 8 goals in 7 games. Both of their playoff careers started in in the 2016/17 season, with Nylander having one extra playoff appearance (last season) over Jake ....Jake is 9th all time in the history of the league for playoff goals per game having only played 8 more playoff games than Nylander....
Finding reasons not to compare the whole playoff careers of two guys who are similar in age, who are both wingers and who started their playoff careers the exact same year, which was only 7 years ago, seems like some mental gymnastics to me. |

Whats so funny, man? their playoffs careers both started 7 years ago...thats not a long time ago and they are both under 30 years old this year.
Two years ago Jake had more goals in a playoffs than Nylander ever did in one, more than Nylander had that year and the one before combined....so is two years ago a long time? |

I hope the Pens re-sign him and pay him the going rate at 11.5M then...

I'm mixed emotions on it. He is a top 5 producing winger in the league the past 5 or 6 years on pace for 92 points, his best season to date...but If he wants max term he's going to be there for some really lean rebuilding years, like the last half of the contract term. However, the Pens older core is still quite competitive and I'd like them to have the best players around them until they retire. They deserve that after all they've given. He could end up being captain of the Pens in 3 or 4 years if he sticks around.

Also both of them either aren't or aren't really rivalries anymore.
Isles/Rangers is most certainly not the most severe rivalry in all of North American sports, but it's up towards the top of the list for sure. |

This is nothing special. There are like 9 other teams without a writer. There are like 8 other teams sharing a writer. I think Ben Shelley himself is covering like 5 teams.

Agree. Isles Rags is infamous! The whole Potvin sucks chant still makes me chuckle. And his response was an all time classic ("I thought they were cheering Potvins' Cups") LOL
Devils / Rags is a pretty good rivalry as well. And we stole the chant and now use it against the Rags. EX: I was at the Devils Blue Jackets game in December and I hear the "whistle" going through the crowd to start the chant and on cue all Devs fans chanted Rangers Suck! Good times |
