yeah, the move looks peculiar but I don't think this all falls on Martin, it looks like Tkachuk is also having leadership problems bringing this team together.

He's only there to end the season.

He can then tell management what he thinks is needed. With his experience, he can also start telling them how to actually play some defense.

I don't mind Jacques Martin as an assistant, I think he's a perfect fit for a team that needs structure. He'll do his job and get replaced next season.

Hopefully by a horrible coach that brings that (frank)ing franchise into the ground where they belong.
