At the end of the day, could they even afford to sign Hart (next contract adds about 3 mil), TK (+5mil), Walker (+2 mil), Seeler (+2 mil), Tippet (+6 mil). That is 18 mil over the next 2 years less 5 for Atkinson. If the cap goes up 4-5 mil per year, they are still short 2-3 mil. Of course there are other expiring contracts that will help, but you can see it will still be a tightrope

That would put his cap hit at $10.5 per, and he is not worth that. This is what I am getting at. Big decisions that could be great for the future and now, or close minded, short term moves made for the now. They need to stay on the bigger picture path.

You really are a funny guy. You will NEVER come off of any of your existing agendas and will NEVER admit to being wrong. That's why I am begging for the Flyers to make the dance and for Torts to win the JA!!

What I am is a smart guy. It's not a situation of awareness as you seem to think it is. I'm quite sure that with advance scouting, coaches are talking to their players pre-game about a team. How they're playing. What to expect. What it is is a human condition. A game against a non rival, non conference. Top NHL teams routinely take up and coming teams lightly. You see down the stretch when a playoff team faces a non playoff team and gets beat. Doesn't bring intensity into the game. Whatever games are on NHL network as the spotlight games, isn't going to change any of that. I hope Tortorella does win the Jack Adams. I doubt that he will though.

At this point, I would give Ristolainen away if another team would just take the contract in full.

At this point? When did you change your mind?

Very much agree with that, but just like Couturier, I do not believe they will trade him. At some point paying players large amounts of money well into their 30's has to stop, an not just for the Flyers. Just about every NHL team makes this mistake. In a perfect world you use your talent to 30yo, then sell off and reload.

You can take it any way you want to, but it's just another indication that the Flyers are one of the biggest stories in the NHL this season to date. And that's a fact Jack!!

It's not a set standard. There are some players that should absolutely be signed into their 30's in the right situation. If the Flyers were a contender, resigning Konecny would be the right thing to do. It should be judged on an individual basis.

I don't think I ever posted that the Flyers haven't been in the hockey news due to the way they're playing. Or aren't being talked about Jack!

I understand the excitement that the team is performing well and is exceeding expectations by a lot, but the current mindset of the fans is troubling. When Hextall was building through the draft, or at least trying to, a couple of years into it, fans got antsy..things got excelerated, JVR and Hayes ended up being signed and we are here now. It had such potential to be patient, and build a proper foundation, with cap control and picks. It felt like we were doing things properly, instead of rushing and then the pressure and impatience came. I fear we are going to head down that path. I like Drysdale and the dimension he adds, but loosing what we thought we had in Guathier, the position he was expected to fill will hurt. I am enjoying them playing well, and I never hope they lose. I have never supported the tanking idea. But the focus has to stay long term, and not getting caught up in the moment.
I just hope DB, KJ and Torts are true to their word, and that bodies are moving out for future assets. The rebuild doesn't have to be 7-10 years long, but it does require patience, and now a new approach due to getting a top d, but losing a huge piece for the future forward plans.

Couple thoughts

Since 1990, only 2 teams have won the cup without a top 5 pick on their roster (‘01 Avs & ‘08 Wings). Every other team has drafted or acquired these players via trade & free agency. The Flyers currently have none in their organization now since Gauthier acted like a child.

To win the Cup, you need a #1C & #1D. Look at Washington and Vegas. WSH had all that talent upfront but couldn’t win until Carlson became a 1D. Vegas needed to get Pietrangelo and Eichel to get over the hump.

A month ago they had none in the organization. As much as Gauthier was hyped up by fans, all experts continued to say he likely tops out as a 2C or 1W, so basically Jeff Carter. But Carter at least was also good defensively. So coming into the season, Flyers still needed to find those players. I figured the flyers would be maybe a few spots better and be in the 10-15 pick range. Still potentially get a great player but smaller chance they’re a 1C or 1D, but the 2024 draft is loaded with defenseman. So then they get Drysdale. Even Torts appears to be very high on him. Now, he’s not the next Pronger but if we’re all lucky maybe he’s the next Desjardins. So do the Flyers have their future 1D in the organization now? I hope so, but with the 2024 draft being loaded with defenseman, I’d still be taking best player available and not reaching for a C.

So then that leaves the Flyers still with a need to find their 1C. Where is that player coming from? With the success this year it’s unlikely to be coming from this years draft. And if they maintain this level, it’s unlikely to ever come from the draft.

Some will say Zegras, no thank you. The one player I thought about in the summer was Elias Pettersson since there were rumors he wanted out. Might VAN’s success this year have changed his mindset? If yes, now what?

I’ve been on team tank for many years now and just like a lot of people I get excited to see the Flyers playing so well. But I keep telling myself to relax, we’ve seen for a decade now the purgatory of good year/bad year/good year/bad year. I often say, they hired Torts 8 years too late and 2 years to early.

I say, trade guys like Walker, Seeler, Staal, etc. and if you want to bring one of those guys back in the summer on a reasonable contract, so be it. But they need to acquire more assets (picks) for those players. The more quality they add to the system will allow them to potentially make a big move in in the next 2-3 years to acquire that 1C, just like Vegas did to get Eichel. The Flyers timeline is the Michkov timeline.

Patience is key right now. Enjoy the Flyers playing well but don’t let it blind you from needing to stay the course on the rebuild.

From the front angle it looked questionable, from the back angle it looked like a sure kicking motion.
