Yes agree, It’s about what country he’s a resident of and what country the company who paid him the funds is from 100%. Signing bonus was paid on the date he signed and his residence was in the USA then.
You and I being US residents can receive a bonus and it can be initially taxed at 15%. However if our tax bracket is higher then you have to pay the additional tax on said bonus. Going to be interesting to see how this plays out. I think the tax savings was part of his taking this deal. That’s a lot of $$$$$$ - nyisles7
It’s going to be interesting to see how this plays out going forward. One has to think that sort of deal had been done before, to get the player their benefit. Is this a new Canada tax thing? I don’t know. But if they start taxing bonuses at 38% Canadian teams are at a major disadvantage. |

I don't think it's a new thing, but teams thought they found a loophole around the higher Canadian income tax by paying out a majority of player's salaries in bonus form and keeping the actual salary low. Now that is likely going to be called into question. It'll be a long time before they sort it out though, but it could certainly affect players decisions to sign bonus-laden deals moving forward. |

It would crush the Canadian teams being able to land players. Talent is going to wanna sign their big contracts anywhere but Canada. |

100% most players have the teams in Canada on their NTL because of the taxes up north.
This certainly was a utilized loophole but since the Leafs don’t want him the Canadian government is changing the law! |

Yeah I mean that’s my question. Is this a new Canadian tax rule? Why is this being questioned now, and not during 2018 |

I don’t know the answer to that one. Are they questioning 2018 or his taxes every year on his Leafs deal? Because 2018 the way things where he should have skirted the tax because his residency was the US. Which was my belief. In 2019 on he was a Canadian resident so normal tax rates should apply. So if he paid 15% on the signing bonuses from 2019 on
then I would believe he’s liable for the tax difference. I don’t know what they’re looking at and I’m only an Uber driver.
All I know is. You don’t want to get in tax trouble here or in Canada! |

I find it interesting that his accountant presumably plotted out his Toronto deal with some sort of “tax plan”, whereby it was more nuanced than the standard template contract, but he didn’t know he was leaving the isles till the last minute. 🫣 |

For all we know he has a legitimate appeals case and this is just the Canadian gov't trying to strong-arm him into paying. I've dealt with a few sales tax audits at work and they essentially just throw out an absurd number and force you to do all the legwork to prove to them why you don't owe them all or a portion of what they say you do. It's pretty much "guilty until proven innocent" |

Yeah I hear you, except your work audit is probably a lot more complex, than if 91 is liable to pay 38% vs 15%. Hopefully for Tavares’ sake he wins because that’s a big screw up by someone on his team. I won’t ever see 8 million let alone having to fork that over to the gov’t for nothing. To be a fly on the wall for that dinner convo….

It wasn't super complex, although the NYS tax code is a little grey in my specific industry so that made it slightly more complicated. But that's what lawyers and accountants are for |

It’s actually awful what’s going on there. That Trudeau is a first overall pick in the lunatic draft. Some of my friends can’t see articles I share cause Canada doesn’t allow certain things to be viewed. - kindlyrick

Patrick Roy's fired-up motivational speech to #Isles to end morning skate really really really makes me want to write good stories
Gross still can't write but I think Roy is gonna turn this season around and we are gonna sneak into the playoffs. Team has looked better and seems re-energized and they are finally getting healthy. |

They looked great the other night. Tonight will be a reasonably good test, but Tampa will rolling with their backup who has a .894sv%/3.34GAA and Sergachev is toast after that injury last night. I'd like to see them string together a couple of strong wins before I get too optimistic but they were very good in the Toronto game |

Bottomline is that they just need to win. I also believe that what Roy has brought to this team has been very positive. Whether it is enough or not, only time will tell.

For sure, full agree. I have zero complaints with Roy so far and it seems like the team has fully bought in as well. |
