well I'm sorry for not being as intellectually agile as you are, Pete.
pretty sure the league could be doing better than it is, money in the owners' pockets or not. |

Well, the mystery of the 4th line center has been solved.

Oh I mean no disrespect Pat.
Just don’t understand the hate for the guy by some people. Knowing full well he works for the owners who must be quite tickled by his results, or they would have canned him years ago.. |

I think you're misinterpreting what I'm saying then.
it's not even "hate", I'm just saying moving on from him could be a good thing.
to think Bettman doesn't have any flaws and is doing a perfect job for the sport is as silly as saying he's the devil. |

The NHL is not an event league, like other leagues. They rely on current fans and are not growing the base.
The only exception is Vegas - look what that team did in that market to generate excitement, make each game an event night, grow a base, etc... Yeah, winning helps, but the overall product - on and off the ice - is amazing.
The rest of the league is bland in comparison.
Betteman did a great job growing the game, getting money and new team into the league, and making the owners rich.
But what next?
There does not seem to be a vision for the league that moves the game forward beyond what it is today, TV ratings are down in a lot of markets, the TV agreements in the US are a mess and might actually collapse.
And then there is just bad PR move after PR move, they try to brush away/distract with other "good" news (ie: Utah announcement just after the Juniors things yesterday).
The continued old school thinking is gonna contract this league, not expand it.
So yeah, Betteman was good for the league at one point, but he is now an anchor (and they need to get someone not named Daily in there, too).

Everyone has flaws Pat.
Under his tenure, franchises worth millions are now worth billions.
I could live with his flaws if I owned one.. |

They love him. He's been here 30 years ffs.
I'd like to see someone else manage the transition in the next tv/streaming deal as I think new ideas could help but, as you said, from the owner point of view, they must have very little complaints.

If there is backlash against the NHL (likely), and there has been a lot of bad PR the last few months (stick tape, cancelling event nights, etc...), someone will have to eventually pay for all these decisions.
Yeah, he made the owners rich, but a lot of those old school guys that put him there are gone, not sure if his support is as big as it use to be, and if the bad PR starts impacting ticket sales....
I do think he is/was near the end, regardless. - Mashadar

The rainbow tape for Pride Night and the cancellations of Pride nights league-wide. Then the teams could hold their own Pride nights individually if they wanted to but the league didn't fully support it afterwards. |
