I think that math is overstated, especially when you factor in replacements.

Covered this in depth over the weekend. Problem with more long term deals doesn't start day 1. It's a year or two later, when a slew of 1st rounders are going to cost. Want Mitts? That's fine. Makes JJ tricky, or Benson/Tuch/Quinn, or goalies, or D.

How much money can you commit, while also not making an effort to improve? Terry should be asking some tough questions. 8 year extensions require 8 year budgets.

Can they keep Casey if they extend him even somewhat long term? Yes.

Does it make things very challenging almost immediately? Oh yes.

It also means you are completely married to this roster, and making any upgrades more difficult.
