Karine Hains: In Hainsight: Hughes Got His Price Kent Hughes didn’t wait for Sean Monahan to get hurt this season; he dealt him to Winnipeg as soon as the veteran center became the most sought-after player on the market.

I also feel that way in a sense, but I don't think it was a distraction for the team either, if anything he was a good player that was appreciated by his teammates in MTL.

Why do they feel the need to analyze a skills competition

no he really was right. over a period of time the refs had let the game get bogged down with all that. nobody wants to see 2-1 scores every game. and hockey wasn't gaining all the new fans they could have been all that time.

so I guess he saved hockey in PIT but also helped the game evolve, kudos to him.

i had 2 full size posters in my room. one was him and the other was patrick roy.

i'd have like smaller posters around like the ones you got in the magazines. they'd kind of rotate and get changed out as you got new magazines and there was, like, a cool picture of hasek that you had to hang up. but the 2 full size posters that were permanent were mario on one wall and roy on another wall.

hardest shot registered this year was Makar with 102.5, which is kinda far from the Chara and Weber shots lol

It's the only competition I like. Straight forward. Unfortunately, it's the fastest and has the least participants

yeah, it's pretty much the only one I like as well.

but as much as I find the jerseys suck and the all-stars game is completely irrelevant for me every year, I get why the league struggles to put new spins on it and make things more interesting to register higher TV ratings, there's so much you can do with it really. I'm sure Bublé on shrooms unexpectedly helped garner attention on the event.

okay so apparently the mushrooms thing was a joke?

I'm not 100% convinced it actually was, but if so, why?

The issue is for new fans, hockey can be complicated to understand. Young people also have no attention span. This skills competition has two issues: the rules are complicated to explain. You shouldn't have to put up a novela to explain the rules. Secondly, too much down time with nothing going on.

are they really that complicated though? I dunno, I feel most of it is rather straightforward, kinda like watching soccer.

i don't really believe its done to attract new fans cause an all-star game is the worse product to highlight any sport.

the cheapest way, in the long run, to get new fans is at the grass roots level. free or deep discounted tickets would be a better way to get new fans in the building.

of all major sports, hockey by far has to be seen live to really hook fans.
