Out of curiosity I looked up the precise definition of “bevy.”

I thought I could use it in a sentence. Words always jump out when I write because I like to write and even had a journalism internship + paid to do some occasional sports writing. I won an award for best sports column for a junior college newspaper but I never followed up on journalism - a long time ago. I enjoyed watching College of DuPage hockey win a couple National junior college championships.

Anyway how about this

The Blackhawks will have a bevy of youngsters in their lineup hopefully incrementally each season the next few years

Now originally bevy meant a group of animals as in hunting the term was for quails

Which is more or less like turkeys

Nowadays bevy can be used to mean a bevy of anything. Quite often a bevy of persons.

Now

In 2025 the Blackhawks will have a lot of turkeys for young players

In 2026 the Blackhawks will have some descent prospects

In 2027 the Blackhawks will have a bevy of prospects their best in many years

In 2028 the Blackhawks will use the old White Sox advertising logo loosely “The kids can play.”

Not entirely sure on the success of prospects exactly on the timeline but we just have to have faith in KD

He needs to roll up his sleeves and work. I agree he has many of the tools to be an effective forward but the one he lacks, so far, is some grit. If he’s going to be successful he needs to get his nose over the puck and start getting involved along the boards, in the corners and in front of the net.

Let’s say that the Hawks pick first and draft Celebrini, does he stay at BU or will he be NHL ready?

The answer is probably to the question, does he want to get paid earlier, rather than later?

Once you are chosen first overall, the drive to succeed is somewhat missing at the collegiate level. It takes a special commitment and Celebrini would concentrate upon personal improvement while being a key piece. A cog in the wheel that turns though can be at the NHL level too He is ready enough for the NHL. He could improve and be more ready should he remain a collegiate but look at the possibilities if he lands in Chicago

Both Bedard and Celebrini are a bit early for their time to excel but the sooner they have proper linemattes and good coaching plus organizational support as teenagers growing into men , there is reality where they experience success on a small scale initially in the NHL Temper our feeling for Bedard and Celebrini too - wherever he plies his trade next season

Dare to hope for Celebrini as you dared to hope for Bedard. Sure. The odds are against us but really not much different than last year when Bedard blew into town.

Thankful for Bedard and overwhelmed with mercy should we be able to select Celebrini

If we do get the right to draft Celebrini that would be fantastic. Won't be disappointed with a top 3 pick either, but to have Bedard and Celebrini, that will be a really nice core to work with, throw in Vlasic and hopefully Korchinski, rebuild definitely heading in the right direction. I think we'll see Slaggert later this year and possibly Nazar.

Great article on The Athletic by Eric Duhatschek on how "If you let that entry-level contract slide a year, let that player mature, and let him play his first NHL season as a 19-year-old, or even a 20-year-old, or even a 21-year-old, instead of as an 18-year-old, everyone usually benefits in the end. Because if a player isn’t suddenly thrown into the NHL deep end and asked to swim, he’s usually readier for the demands that lie ahead...it does make you think that the teams willing to be patient, even with their high-pedigree draft choices, can reap greater benefits, down the road, if they let them mature gradually."
((When I read this, my knee jerk reaction was that I was incorrect in my thoughts to encourage Frankie Nazar after tis season.

(Anybody else read that stick how they wanted Korchinski here so he wasn't playing deep into the Dub playoffs and here so he was in a daily commitment to their body building regime. Makes sense.)

I know what you are getting at here,Louie, where is the firepower going to come from next year.
There is an obvious commitment by the current squad to the coaching staff solid system.
Jason Richardinson, Nick Foligno, Ryan Donato are signed and this type muckers have to continue.
Taylor Hall, Andreas Athanasiou, & Philipp Kurashev are signed for another season. That is half of the forwards group.

Add Bedard, and you cannot help but wonder what personnel in those final five slots that moves the needle in a positive direction.

You figure PK Taylor Raddysh, then try and wonder if Boris Katchouk, Lukas Reichel, and the like are worthy to fill them.

Since Macklin Celebrini has on college season in the books and also has shown celebrated success at every level so far, he probably stays with the Blackhawks.

Another shiny ticket seller.

Any other selection will most likely need more time.

I do think they will attempt to add a better linemate, like an Eberle, to help ease Bedard's current frustration that his current teammates aren't aware of his offensive leads or can't finish them, let alone "see" the places he is going to be to make a scoring play.

There's been more discussion and disection here of the play involving Phillips helping Katchouk off the ice than the Warren Commission review of the Zapruder film.
- boilermaker100

That really was an awful break...what bother we was how the Chicago TV crew seemed to miss how Phillips' jump in on the 3-2 goal play where his stick sent the puck- or am I incorrect as he didn't get the assist?

- LFS

Korchinski started the season with no clue what to do when he didn’t have the puck. He’s improving even though last night he got caught standing around admiring the Rangers passing and failed to identify and cover Lafreniere standing alone at the side of the net. If Reichel gets his nose dirty getting involved in the play he can figure out the defensive side of the game.

I agree, while that puck needed to be advanced by Raddysh, Phillips should have waited for that to happen before he helps Katchouk off the ice. So basically they lost Katchouk and Phillips due to Katchouk’s blade, that’s why it wasn’t very smart for Phillips to get engaged there. By the way, Blackwell and Kurashev are playing their butts off.

at least Kurashev can snipe a corner once in a while. Blackwell thinks the goalies crest is a target.

Quote from Richardson regarding the young defensemen who played last night. (Excerpt from Bamford's column.)

Those guys are going to get valuable lessons and reps in a really tight game against a team you have to be on alert at all times. Panarin and Zibanejad, all six of their D get up in the play. We have to really sort out a line rush and our D are the quarterbacks on that. they have to call out what they see. They’re the only guys, other than the goalie, that face up ice and see everything. The forwards are skating back, so they don’t really see everything sometimes. We expect them to grow the confidence to be verbal and loud and talk and call it out on point and sort things out. They’re a very tough line rush to defend. I thought they did a pretty good job against them tonight.

I don’t like saying that Slaggert and Nazar plus IF we wind up with either Celebrini or Eiserman would be the only young guys able to play here next season. Ready for the NHl challenge might be a better way to say it. There is no guarantee that we actually draft either of those two, but Eiserman is realistic should we get the third or fourth slot.

So move ahead to the season after next.
All our forward prospects might be close but probably would benefit from seasoning in the AHL Thus would include Green and Savoie. Possibly Misiak and Ludwinski (sic). I really like the cast with Slaggert and Nazar but our preresiquite should be 1) a top young forward (preferably Celebrini or Eiserman) and 2) veterans Hall and Foligno are still here and productive

Athensieu or some other veteran too yet possibly Dach will battle several fourth liners type for the last spot. With kids moving in there may be a change of address though for R Johnson, Entwhistle, and possibly both forwards we acquired from Tampa. I omitted Hayes plus there could be a surprise from the ‘24 draft

I expect that Kaiser DelMastro are the next dmen while Phillips won’t stick. Allen and Crevier can play another year in the AHL.

Several teams around the league have promoted dmen they drafted and who have three or more AHl seasons. So perhaps Allen and Crevier is that sort of prospect; wouldn’t surprise me if KD has that thought and envisions their worthiness on a third pair.

I like Allen’s style and toughness and I hope that Crevier becomes adept using his big body to tie up or rub out opponents. Using angles masterfully, his reach and leverage his girth (get stronger) means he doesn’t have to be overly physical. I hope he can be a smart well balanced dman and please use his stick like Vlasic does.

Yes Crevier is my darkhorse to make the NHL

Hey Hawk, what years did you write for DuPage College?
- 6628

The College of DuPage won three National Junior College Championships. I don’t recall the year for both, but one was in 1988. Of course their first title was in 1980 but the missing year for a third title I need to research it. Their team name is The Chap’s.

They just won back to back junior college football championships 2022 and 2023 BTW. Hockey became a club team at COD around year 2000. In their college sponsored years due to a lack of junior college with a hockey program, they often competed against a four year school JV squad and of course they always had games against the powerhouse junior team named the Chicago Patriots? You should know what team I can’t quite recall their name. The coach for their first two championships was the college Athletic Director, Herb Salberg. The hockey team was his favorite team

I admired Bib Verdi’s writing style and wrote similarly. Salberg told the journalism teacher and student editor that I knew how to write hockey - it was my description of the plays and terminology that stood out

Anyway College of DuPage is or was and probably remains the largest junior college student wise in the country with most commuting as part time students. Then oh roughly ten or more years ago they transitioned to a four year program as well. Recognized for the teacher to student ratio and the strong acedemic reputation, the college has reaped the benefits of considerable income to build state of art facilities.

An encouraging albeit minor light beam of hope as a portent good things to come tonight with Dach returning to action and Stauber a star of the game in Rockford’s 2-1 victory

Stauber stopped 15/16 shots and once touted prospect Hardman had both goals (14 on season)

I don't expect, but hope they make a move to sign or trade for another Taylor Hall type. Basically a veteran that can play somewhat.
I honestly think if Hall was healthy Bedard would be at about point per game clip.
From what Davidson has said they are "sticking to the plan" which I don't like too much. You can't draft an entire team. Even the 2010 team had a group of Ladd/Hossa/Sharp that they didn't draft.
Trade a few prospects or picks for someone that is a bit more established etc..

Well you have to start somewhere, it started March 18, 2022 with the Bagel trade. So this isn't even 2 years old.

So trade assets for futures, check
Put actual NHL talent in the farm system, check
Align future assets to grow farm system, check
Develop players at different levels, check
Cut ties with aging over paid players, check
Align salaries and salary cap for flexibility and growth, check
Win lottery for the next generational player, lucky as hell, check

Big question mark is how good is our scouting and product development department? We'll see and the trades will eventually come and technically i think you can build through the draft if you continue to have 3 to 5 picks in the top 50 and 3 to 5 picks in the top 50 to 100, which tend to be other teams futures.

Not a lot of metrics to illustrate the benefits. It's an anecdotal statement. If you look at professional trajectories and getting the most 'value'. The sooner a player is in the NHL the better since it's a 2 or 3 year process to get acclimated to the league regardless of how much time spend in the juniors or AHL. Players who step in and are excellent aren't the norm.

With the cap the way it is, it seems generally better to get a guy in the league at 20ish so they're hitting their stride in their 22 or 23 year rather than 25 so you can maximize productive years in their 20s.

Is there a balance between a player spending an extra year in the NCAA or maybe one in the AHL while they figure out some of the how to be a pro stuff? Probably. But when talented players are ready to move forward and accept the next challenge they need to get it.

Example: Does someone like Korch benefit from a year in the AHL to get hit over the head with the physicality and adjust to more games but more week days off to recover? Probably. Does it make sense to leave him there for 2 or 3 years if it's still going to take 2 or 3 years for him to hit his stride in the NHL? Probably not and definitely not going back to juniors to skate circles around guys.

Meaning he doesn't reach potential until 25 vs 23. And with the drop in performance after 30 for a vast majority of the players is it better to get 7 years of top performance or 5 to maximize potential? It's better for the org - probably better for the player in terms of maximizing salary - at least for the most talented players.

A player like Vlasic is a good example of letting a player mature at their own pace but also pushing them when necessary. He needed the 3 years in college, the one year in the AHL seems like it was beneficial, and now he's taken the next step and looks good. He needed to grow into his body at bit as well.

The extra year in college probably benefited Toews.

Patrick Kane didn't need any additional time.

If Nazar (he's already 20) is capable of playing in the NHL - you probably play him in the NHL - there isn't any reason to leave him in the NCAA or whatever unless there is something physically they're waiting for maturity wise or there is a clear gap in his game that needs to be ironed out before the next step.
