Like talking to a stump. We obviously had to make the trade. But we still had considerable time.
- ClaudeFather

why exactly do you think waiting would have helped us? don't you think gms would get curious as to why we are waiting so long to get the mvp of the wjc signed and onto our team? just because we had time doesn't mean waiting to pull the trigger would have gotten us a better return. quite the opposite imo

This is where the conversation ends stump. No one said waiting would help us. Just that it was not a now or never trade.

Exactly, potential wise, Gauthier has the higher potential. The Flyers made what they could out of it but unless Gauthier busts, it's not a home run.
- MJL

Except it wasn’t just Cutter Gauthier for Jamie Drysdale. It was Cutter Gauthier who has never sniffed NHL ice for an established Jamie Drysdale and a 2025 second round pick. The best comparison I’ve heard for Cutter is JvR or Jeff Carter.

lol what kind of argument is that? who cares if we could have held onto him? if time wasn't important than DB and Jonesy wouldn't have said they were grateful other GMs kept their mouths shut. We sold high right after WJC before EVERY GM knew we had ZERO leverage.

If the alternative is a bag of pucks then of course it was a now or never trade. what are you even arguing? take a lap

I think the fact Briere felt like he had to quietly move Gauthier is telling. Especially if you felt the need to thank the other Fans for keeping things quiet.,

Drysdale doesn’t look like a top pairing guy. Top 4 maybe. I remember when the trade went down another fan from another team commented that his ceiling is Sam Girard. I’m not seeing anything different so far

OT in the Super Bowl should be an extra quarter in full not the dumb crap they have now.

Either way, to get a young mobile D and a 2nd for a guy who has never sniffed NHL ice and wasn't going to sign with you anyway - I'll be happy with that - and if he reaches beyond that ceiling - even better

the alternative is everyone knows Cutter won't sign and the rest of the league laughs at us for not being a good enough destination for a young potential star AND not getting value back in a deal in time...

but hey, what's the rush?

It’s crazy to me. Morgan Frost at age 24, closing in on age 25. Those defenders still refer to Frost as developing. Drysdale steps in for 11 games, a product of Anaheim. Somehow we’re expecting either a dominant number 1 right now, or bust. We don’t even know what we’re getting with the Ducks second round pick yet. It’s unthinkable to me that Briere was able to pull off getting a young roster player and a second round pick for a prospect.

Don’t give the ball with time remaining to Mahomes. In any event, this means Niners fans can quit their yapping and whining about last season now.

Gauthier couldn't be signed anyway at that point in time until his NCAA season was over.

He's 21 and is basically in his 2nd NHL season. Missed a lot of time due to injury.

He's 21 years old! Look how much York has grown as a player since last season, and he is only going to get better. Look, will York or Drysdale ever be Hedman, Pietrangelo or even Makar? Of course not. But can both develop into a foundation of the defense for years to come? Absolutely. And do you really need a defenseman like Hedman or Makar to win a cup? I don't think you do.

Many folks would argue that you do need that big stud defender to win a Cup! The last time the Flyers went to the Finals they had Chris Pronger. It's probably not an absolute necessity, but it sure as hell doesn't hurt.

At this point, is there any difference between the Superbowl and Wrestlemania? I don't think so, and frankly if I am watching purely for entertainment, Wrestlemania is the better event.

Yes, but define stud defender. To me, teams that win have that 1 defender that can eat up 25 minutes. It's not so much about the offense, it's the minutes played and the quality of those minutes. I think York and Drysdale can potentially both be that type of player. They are not going to have the size or the reach, but they can make up for that with their speed and skill.

York can't and won't. York is a good player but he is 2nd pairing at best. He doesn't have high level skill or speed. Drysdale has the potential to be a top pairing defenseman due to his skating, ability on puck retrievals and puck movement and precision passing ability. He needs to get a lot better defensively though. It is a must for the Flyers to get that stud defenseman. They won't go anywhere without it.
