Any time you use your stick as a weapon and hit someone in the head, the suspension should start at five games. I'd even be fine with a five game suspension any time you use your stick as a weapon. Get it out of the game.
Hockey is the only non-combat sport where you can punch someone and not really get panalized for it. Take advantage of it. Look at what Gudbranson got, even though it was probably worse than what Reilly did. - Squeaky
What if you spear a guys in the gonads? Even when the puck isn't near the players?
Should you get a 5 games suspension? |

Sorry but while boston fans are the most annoying, Leaf fans are the most whiny.
Had the shoe been on the other foot and someone even looked funny at Mathews or messed up Willie Stiles hair...Leaf Nation, including the juvenile media coverage, would be calling for lifetime bans.
It might be hard to understand, but stick infractions, like this one are a slippery slope. They will all be cracked down on hard, otherwise it will invite more of the same, which will eventually lead to a serious injury.
Reilly could have accomplished his objective with a cross check to the side of the ribs and a glove face wash. Instead you lose your most valuable guy for 5 games.
Point the finger at him and his lack of discipline. Likely costs team valuable standings points. - TrueGrit
Oh (frank) off with that BS. There is no need for for that first sentence.

Well.
This has been an interesting few days.
I gotta say though, every extreme comments about Rielly I've heard, either defending him completely or making him sound like the worst person on earth sound equally ridiculous to me. |

Yikes! Bad idea my guy, these soft served Canadians are quite void of reality, have you seen who they have running their country?
Best to leave them to their MAID, how sad they have to wait until 2027 to be slaughtered by their loving and progressive government.

I just wish it was Reaver or someone expendable who sticked that fool. Regardless of how it went last time, the Leafs can't afford to lose their best d-man for 5+ games.
Rielly should have just licked his face and speared him in the junk and we'd only be looking at a fine and 1 game suspension.

As you posted all previous cross checks to the neck and head, when will the players stop doing it? These arent in the heat of the moment plays, these are after whistle scrums. Sooner or later there will be a player who will wind up seriously injured as a result of one of these incidents, then the league will look like a circus act for letting it go on for so long.
Yes it was a bush league play and I dont see going after him as a problem but to crack him high is dumb. Stop the poop that it the hit was on his shoulder and then hit him in the neck, the motion was upwards so of course the stick was going to ride up to his neck/head.
Its time to get rid of this garbage plays and make a statement. 6 games. |

Neither....I live rent free....
Can't leaf fans just talk about how they will be fine without Reilly, that Giordano can step up and cover those minutes? Or Brodie is just Reilly light???
Trying to be positive.
Don't worry if the lighting don't capitalize on this and win some games, I will be just as frustrated as leaf fans.

I dont think Rielly being out 5, 6, 10 games changes much. they havent been playing that good, and with Rielly out..they will still play meh im sure |

I know this may not be a popular opinion but I definitely agree that the instigator penalty needs to go and that it has a negative impact on the game and overall safety of the players. However, I do not believe it is relevant at all in this situation because an instigating penalty would have had zero impact on this game. Also, any comments about him using his stick to avoid the instigator suspension are misguided because it does not result in a suspension until the player receives his third instigator penalty of the season. Let's be clear here, #44 is not in danger of that. Rielly had options but chose to lead with the stick.
As for the initial incident, I think most people are in agreement that the Leafs had every reason to be pissed. What surprises me is that some of the other Leaf players on the ice at that time didn't seem to be nearly as pissed as Rielly was. |

I will also add that as a Wings fan, I would have preferred for this entire incident not to have taken place. In the battle for the playoffs, I worry that this type of situation could pull a team together with a bit of an "Us against the world" type of mentality. |

It's good thing that the presence of Reaves deterred this kind of nonsense....
Wait.... it didn't.
Well then, it's a good thing Reaves took care of business afterwards...
Wait, he didn't.
I didn't have Rielly's heel turn on my 2024 Bingo Card.
