Two out of three guys you mentioned are excellent players. Tarasenko is on a one year deal. Mihkeyev isn't even the worst contract on the team, luckily Myers is out this year and we can not be under that albatross. Mikhayev was a three year deal exactly long-term, same with Reaves. - neem55
All of those players were shopped in the final years of their contracts (excellent players or not)
Three year contracts are still contracts that were GMs predicting the future as per your opening comments. GMs screw up just as much as everyone.
There was an old saying in the NHL that salary caps are put in place to save teams from screwing themselves. It is a very good saying IMO.

I grant you that's less than I would have thought without looking, for sure. - neem55
His defensive game isn't bad. It's just not at the top line good. |

From a players stand point, Hughes should fire his agent. Petey's agent played their hand far better is all. Not what fans and GM's want to hear but Hughes going long term didnt work out for him. The bridge is going to work out for Petey though. - boonerbuck

Seems pretty good, one of the better penalty killers in the league. - neem55
When people look at Marner as a defensive ace they typically look at his takeaways.
In his career he has 561 takeaways vs 524 giveaways. Part of playing defence is taking care of the puck.
Nylander as an example is known for being a slouch defensively, but he has 429 career takeaways vs 298 giveaways.
Matthews is actually the best 2 way player on the team among forwards. |

There's a lot of NHL forwards with net minus when it comes to giveaway/takeaway, you think that it is bad!?

I think you've lost the plot a bit here, you started by saying there's way too many bad long-term contracts. I disagree.

Part of playing playmaker on the offensive side of the puck is giveaways. Matthews is shooter not playmaker.
When Marner is getting 2 minutes of PK time a game vs Matthews getting less than a minute, I think that would also show part of who is a bit better defensively. |

It isn't Selke worthy.
But having 26 of the 200 PHWA voters in Toronto is. |

No, I'm curious to see how he matches up statistically to the other top forwards.

My main comment is GMs screw up way more that you think. Your first comment was That is why they are GMs and we are fans because they know they are doing. I disagreed.
It went from there to they screw up long term and short term.
IMO long term contracts have a shelf life of about three to four years before everyone wants them off the books. Very rarely do they work out. For every Sidney Crossby you will find fifteen other players teams wished they had not gone that long including players like Tarensenko Price Weber Parise OEL Suter Weber Fluery Laine Eriksson Quick Parayko Toews and so on and so on.
Then I added they screw up also on short term contracts also.

Because last year they were trying to trade him. Much like Brock Boeser he was not playing well enough last year and ST L was trying to free up cap.

Petey has 21 giveaways on the season. Kucherov has 3 times that.
Some just want perfect all the time. He's tied for 1st in GWG this year with Reinhart.
Petey can get stronger and will get stronger, that's not a hard trait to figure out. - manvanfan
It's a silly thing to focus on unless it's a serious problem and when you start comparing amongst his peers, it's not.. People can be ignorant.

I forgot. What a fkn burn for Hughes although Hughes might of laid out what he wanted to his agent instead of the influence going the other way. Who knows, certainly not me. |

How does that change what I said? Even more so actually. Same agent yet look how much greener the grass is going to be for Petey. I'd hope Hughes wanted this and not his agent, or I'd be pissed.
Dude can only figure out one knot and one way to fish... talks dumb... typical goalie. Shouldn't you be rearranging your socks and tapping doors in 3 groups of 3 before entering?
I meant to ask you if guys got a gig for new years eve? I hear Avril Lavigne cover bands are popular amongst you types.

It's hilarious. They think it's good that he put his team in this position with his 5 games. They are a bubble team. If I am going to smash a players face in and be out for a bunch of games when we are just clinging to a playoff spot.... one of my team mates will have to be targeted pretty harshly or lying on the ice. I didnt see them stretchering the net off the ice even... he took it like a champ.
Can't wait for the " we missed the playoffs but we sent a message about empty net clappers... no one can call us pussies".
