There's a Burmese place nearby with great food, and 48oz Nitro Boddy's on tap. I always drive there, I always get driven home.

I love English bitters even if a lot of them are a little bit boring. Boddingtons was one of the first beers I had that wasn't a lager.

Tetleys, Old Speckled Hen, Bass, John Smiths, Fullers ESB or London Pride, Marston's Pedigree, Shepherd Neame Spitfire, Caffreys, Kilkenny, Caledonian 80, Greene King Abbot Ale, Wychwood Hobgoblin, Thwaites Lancaster Bomber Ale, Ruddles County Ale, Harviestoun Bitter & Twisted, and just about any other ale from the UK or Ireland that you could find lol.

Out of all of those I think only Caffreys, Kilkenny, Tetleys, and Old Speckled Hen if you get it in cans are as creamy as Boddingtons though. They have the little widget in them, at least they do here.

I'd personally recommend Old Speckeled Hen and Caledonian 80 from that very good list. You can find the hen at certain British style (themed) pubs. Caledonian on draught though is a very rare find. There's one place in Niagara on The Lake i can think of.

Yep, main colour is blue.

That's what mine look like, only it says "light english ale" at the top instead of "draught bitter".

I guess you don't live in Ontario lol. I listed all the ones available at the LCBO or beer store here. That sucks!

My top 3 from that list are the Fullers beers, Bitter & Twisted, and probably Hobgoblin. All the beers I listed are drinkable but some have more or less flavour than others.

good luck on your beer quest

It's not exactly the same style (brown ale vs pale ale) but you should be able to find Newcastle Brown Ale wherever you are. It's pretty decent.

I don't care for Newcastle Brown, personally. You also will get made fun of in most British towns for ordering it, as it's considered a lady's beer.

Probably tells you a lot about British women.

Bit watery if anything these days, imo. You must've had a bad batch. It used to be better when it was still brewed in Newcastle but a lot better than the macro lagers here at least.

I forgot about Smithwicks. Add that to my list.

i see it's at this bar around 15th street that i go to a couple times a year.

i thought they'd have more of these, but all i see on the website is boddingtons, the newcastle brown ale, and ... that's all i guess for what might be this type of beer.

they have something called schafly's too.

First I've ever heard that and my Mom and her side of the family were all from a town near Newcastle lol. Maybe it was perceived differently in other parts of England. People in England drink a lot of house milds (~3%) and other light ales so I find it weird to think of them making fun of someone for ordering a Newcastle Brown Ale.

Around Newcastle, I'm sure it's a different story. I lived in Manchester about a year, spent a couple weeks in York and time in London... Had a friend who loved the stuff and got no end of grief for it. Especially in Manchester.

Bunch of weirdos.

Very unusual. I can't imagine that sentiment is very widespread though. Could've just been the area you were in. Lager being a womans drink used to be a popular thought there, but now I think lager has surpassed ale as the #1 beer in the UK by a mile lol. Go figure.
