Sounds like one of my friends. He had the beer I just bought probably a month ago and he hated it so much apparently he's completely turned off smokey foods too now.

This one still tastes like beer, but it is still really smokey. Almost like a smoked ham beer or something. Totally weird but it works for me. Tasty in a marmite kind of way.

If it doesn't taste like some kind of weird smoked meat it's not a real rauchbier!

I've had some lightly smoked or peated ones that were pretty good but they were more like standard beers than anything.

Had a New Belgium Shift - 5.0% pale lager. Aside from coming in a tall boy can, willbe a very good hot weather beer.

Otter Creek 20th Anniversary Ale, 12-ish%, strong ale. Almost too sweet. Tastes really good other than the sweetness. Nice slight hop flavor. Kinda reminiscent of a true barleywine. Finishing off the last half of a growler on an empty stomach. As I'm not much of a drinker, I'm getting pretty messed up on this stuff.

I've only had three different rye beers but they've all been meh. I'm not sure we should be making beer with the stuff.
