LOL! Guys come down to Newark NJ on saturday night. There's this thing we like to call Portugese Day Weekend (although the huge ammount of Portuguese immigrants that have been coming to Newark for longer than I have been living is why they started it). But now it's more than a few people watching a parade. People from all surrounding towns gather on Newarks Ferry Street which streches just over a mile long to party all day saturday and sunday. Stands that sell everything from BBQ to Watchs. Beer to Shots are lined all the way down from one end of the street to the other. It's a huge Mardi Gras'esque party.

I used to live in MA large Portugese population in Fall River/New Bedford. They know how to party and eat! Have you ever eaten pigs ears, I used to see them in grocery stores and I believe they deep fry them as a snack!

They do, worked several months in Rio de Janiero (I know rough duty, but someone had to do it). They've got restaurants there called chascurria (sp?) that are out of this world.

LoL. Yups. My pops is from Rio. I was born and raised in Sao Paulo (till I came to the US anyways) a Crurrascaria (mom had to spell that out for me LoL) is basicly what ya' mean(btw you spelled it alot closer than I did befor I asked) It's a Brasilian or Portuguese BBQ pit. Except they don't use BBQ sauce, meat is cooked in various ways, as I described before with just salt, or lemon pepper and salt and a few other mixes (one includes mixing pig blood..... Don't ask). Crurrascaria is a play on the word Churrasqueira which really means a BBQ Grill. They have tons around here.

Yes Portuguese people eat pig ears (my grandfather is Portuguese and went to Brasilian when he was like 20 something) They also boil it along with a bunch of other meats ie. sausage, something that resemebles cornbeef and other salted/smoked meats with black beans. Basicly it makes a big stew type thing you throw over white rice. Man it's good. It's called Feijoada.

Wow, I wouldn't have put an "R" there in a million years (Crurrascaria), but you're right. All they serve is meat, the waiters roam around with just about every kind of meat you can think of, and keep giving you more until you flip this little sign over that says "sim" or "Nom" (yes or no). Great food, recommend it to anyone.

Oh by the way I think the deep fried pig ear thing you saw might of been a dog snack. We used to give those to my dog instead of chew bones because they are hard as a rock.

Rio, never been there but it looks like trouble, beautiful women parties etc. Was it worth the trip?

Awesome! Not only was I paid for being there, but the hotel was right across the street from Copacabana. So many beautiful women, so little time. (Just check for spare baggage first!)
The city itself is extremely dangerous though.

I laughed the first time I saw them in the pork section at the grocery store. They're just ears in a package you can almost picture the pig running around without them on their heads!

Haha yes, I didn't think I would get a nice little dose of information on Brazilian/Portuguese culture and immigration in Newark on a hockey site. So then my next question naturally is: Are there any good Portuguese or Brazilian beer that you know of?

Also I just got back from Ireland. Guinness is, of course, very good there. I wouldn't drink it here, or rather I don't think I could stand to now that I've had the "real" thing. Smithwick's is also a very good Irish lager. Although I'm guessing that Smithwick's (SmidRichards) isn't so bad here as Guinness is...I haven't tried it here yet. Has anyone else?

Michelob Ultra is good IMO a type of beer than you can have anytime. I have heard many times Guiness is better there than here.

As far as good Portuguese or Brasilian beers. Try Brahma for Brasilian beer and Sagres for Portuguese. I've had both and really like each.

I toured the Lone Star Brewery in San Antonio Texas about 15 years ago. Man was it HOT done there that summer. Has anyone else been there, or any other tours of other breweries?

The beer we drank in Rio was "Solar", not bad, a pale ale, locally brewed.
To Wizard: I just did a job last year in Belfast, and my boss at the time (a Limey) said to try the Guiness, so I did. I didn't much like it, but that's just me, I don't like eating my beer. As a side note: Did you know that to be a bartender in Belfast, you MUST be able to make a shamrock in the foam with the tap? Pretty cool. The bar can also be fined if more than 5% of the pint is head.

Never saw anyone get busted for it, but every pub I went to in Belfast had the shamrock on top.
