Pepe Nero is a different style of beer. It's some kind of Frankenstein creation that is alright but not amazing. It's a dark rye saison with too much of a metallic aftertaste for me to truly love it. In my opinion DV Dubbel is miles better. Pere Jacques on the other hand is really really similar.

Man I'm way too snobby sometimes. I'll shut up.

i actually love pepe nero, never heard such a negative review of it before... different strokes i guess

Sorry, searched-copied-pasted too fast, I really was referring to the Père Jacques (Had the Pepe Nero last weekend - it's indeed not that great).

Oh well. You're not being snob - it's indeed not the same thing at all

I do actually like it but it's just a little bit odd and the metallic thing hurts it a bit. I am pretty sure I gave it a positive review on here after I had it the first time.

Now DV Dubbel or Pere Jacques.. yum. They're on another level. They're not just good or "alright", they're world class imo.

Both the bottles I bought had rusty caps (outside, not inside) but I don't think it affected the beer. My first bottles of Matilda and Sofie had the same issue and they didn't have any off flavours compared to newer bottles that didn't come with rusty caps.

I have no clue what they did with that first shipment to cause that. From what I heard from other people it appeared to be a widespread issue with the LCBO release.

There was a pub in Manchester called The Lass O' Gowrie right near MMU when I spent a semester there. They had several fine beers on tap but the 80 Schilling was my #1. The place was a Mancunian "cheese pub", in that you would go in, get a pint and a board of hard bread and a couple wedges of cheese.

Where you headed in Scotland?

- nfph

Good to know. Ill have to make a day trip down there. Im headed to St. Andrews. Its a small little town right near Dundee

Really great dubbel. At least as good as the Dominus Vobiscum Double.

Now I feel bad for "wasting" this on a Flyers-Rangers game on a Wednesday night.

I forgot about that beer. I had it a while ago and loved it. Thanks for reminding me. Gotta go have some now...

I like to pretend I didn't even post in this thread until the last few years. I was still on my English beer thing when this thread was made.

Noir Blanche's beers are good at the brewpub, but their bottled offerings have been underwhelming so far. Have you tried the TrIBUnale? Pretty good American brown ale.

Bought me some of these to get me through the Habs/Bruins game tonight

Not the barrel aged one, the regular version. Just noticed the barrel aged sticker on top of the bottle in that pic.

Great choice.

Especially since it was fresh. I'm not sure why but fresh bottles are fairly consistently better than what we get on tap. Way more tropical fruit from the hops compared to more of a spicey yeast thing on tap. When it first started showing up on tap here a few years back it was more like the current bottled version.

I haven't seen any indication that they are actually different recipes so I'm not sure how to explain the differences.

Also had one of my Westy's tonight.

It's aging nicely.
