that lager question:

flip a coin, there's not much separating them.

My friend brought me a bottle of this and I had it last night. It was nice. It didn't have nearly as much of a brett character as I was expecting but it didn't need it.

Which batch is it? 001, 002 or 003? Should be at the back of the bottle.

My favourite so far was the 001, but they're all great.

- EssuieToutJeune

It was 004 and it was pretty good. It gets significantly better as it approaches room temperature and has time to open up too. The trouble is it's so damn drinkable that it's hard to let it sit around long enough to get to that point.

Niiiiice

Brewed a Belgian Pale Ale yesterday. My OG was 0.09 lower than anticipated, so this is likely a temperature issue during the mashing or maybe I did the sparging too fast, but oh well, this'll make a nice 4% pale ale.

And as you said a couple of months ago I'll be sure to cold crash the beer before bottling.

Sounds tasty! I'm all over the map on my efficiencies too .. the Saison in the keg was like 8 points over my target and fermented out more than expected too so she's a little boozy. Oh well, still beer

All grain? What have you used for this one? I'm reading everything I can on brewing.

Yep AG. It was the Saison kit from OntarioBeerKegs. I've done a couple of their all grain kits and have been really pleased with them. They'll give you a couple options for yeast strain so you can tailor it a bit. Grain bill for this one was 85% 2 Row and 15% Munich, all Styrian Golding for hops and WLP566 for Yeast.

Used a heater belt on a plastic bucket that I kept my carboy in to jack up the heat a bit since apparently that strain does well up into the 90'sF and will kick off lots of funky esters, which was different for me, I'm used to trying to control temps on the cool side so just letting it fly was a little scary.

I need to get a house with a garage so I can have my own mini brewery. I want to make my own beer so badly but I don't want my house to smell like fermenting beer.

Just had my first one of these. It's like they took regular Aventinus and multiplied everything by 1.5. Intense.

Update:

Against my better judgement I had a second Eisbock.

I'm only brewing 1 gallon batches. Does not smell like fermenting beer in the appartment, makes me learn, as this still requires the same steps as for 5 gallons, and it won't make me too sick (figuratively) if I botch a brew.

And that's what I was able to negociate with Ms. nay for the moment.

So I should just pour an Aventinus in a saucepan let it reduce 50%?

Why is camping an occasion for bad beer? Curious.

PS - I tend to hike and paddle a bit when I camp, my go-to is whiskey.

i don't camp but i'm pretty sure the answer is they're drinking like 70 cans each and these go down like water and are affordable to consume in such a manner.

i admit when i go to the mountain i sometimes drink poop beer because it's cold and watery and i can down a lot of it while sitting in the heat.

Because when I camp I just want to slam crap beer, I bring good beer along as well. I just go with crap beer because I don't drink water until I'm going to sleep. Also whiskey comes with me pretty much everywhere.

I always wonder the same thing when it comes to hot weather. Drink poopty lager because it's hot? Weird.
