The Government regulates the distribution and sale of Beer in Ontario, so basically it's an Monopoly.

"The Beer Store" is the only place you can buy beer in Ontario. The whole system is Unionized so that adds to the cost of the final product.

In Quebec it's the brewers who distribute their own beer to retail outlets who then sell it in a completive marketplace, which keeps prices down.

Even imported beer is way cheaper in Quebec. My favourite (Bitburgher) is over $2.00 a can (500ml) in Ontario, while I can pick up a case (of 24) at the Costco in Quebec for what works out to $1.60 a can.

One plus about the beer store is the selection . Fortunately I can bring beer over the border with me. Bitburger is a great beer!

I use to live in B.C. the system there was that the government had "warm beer stores" that also sold wine and spirits the private sector had coolers and sold the products a a slightly higher price and had better hour of operation.

In alberta we have a private system the alcb gives ranges that the independant store owner can charge and they choose where within the range to sell the product.

Unfortunatley in Calgary and Edmonton the big chains have occupied most of the market in lethbridge the independants still run the market and price wise blow the big retailors out of the water in terms of price.

on a side note my friend brought a bottle from the states on his last visit it was made here in lethbridge imported to the U.S. and he could have brought three up for the price i would pay here. dispite the fact it was made here in my home town. that has more to do with the federal governments so-called tax than with any provincial governments regulations.

although B.C. technically wants you to drive to a transfer station any time you cross the border and pay additional taxes on any liquor you drive across the border.....like that is going to happen. same thing for cigs.

When I go to the the Quebec Costco ( in Gatineau ) it amazes me that when I compare the "unit pricing (cost per 100 ml) Bitburgher is cheapest beer in the store most times, and why anyone would but something else is beyond me.

On the subject of bringing beer over the USA/Canada border...........Canadians returning to Canada have to outside of Canada for 48hrs before they can bring 24 beers max per person over the drinking age, into Canada.

Are there the same regulation for US Citizens returning to the USA?

Not sure what the regulations are, but I usually stop at the duty free and buy a few bottles of Jack or Jim Beam. I just don't declare it! Shhhhh.

Agreed. Although I'm prejudiced against light beers in general.

Back on subject, I've grown an addiction to Goose Island's 312 . That stuff is amazing, but I can't find anything more than a 6 pack around here and only 2 bars have it on draught.

Once in a while I choose to drink a light beer. I'm not one of those "loyal to one brand" type of beer drinker. Most of the time I buy and drink Bitburgher, which I have posted about many times in this thread.

If you were to drink a light beer, what would you recommend?

Sorry, man. I wasn't trying to pick on you. Just wanted to be the first to throw in the "Bud Sucks."

I never really understood the whole concept of light beer, other than you can drink a ton of something that somewhat tastes like beer, without getting drunk. I guess, if that's waht they were going for, then they succeeded. I've never been a fan of A-B products, but, I guess the light beer I drink the most of would be Miller Lite. All the guys at the Fire Station drink it and, I have found it to be the lesser of the evils. I like the fact that I can drink it all afternoon while throwing horseshoes with the neighbors and I don't have to worry about breaking any windows or ankles. Labbatt Blue Light isn't all that bad either. I actually like Miller Chill and find it to be somewhat refreshing after mowing the lawn on a hot day. Haven't yet tried Bud's answer to it (Bud Light Lime). Most of the stuff in my fridge is higher in alcohol so, I will usually keep a case of Miller Lite around for guests, or when I don't feel like getting drunk

I'm not sure if you folks north of the border are in Leinenkugels territory, but I have been getting into their brews lately. The Summer Shandy (Weiss beer mixed with Lemonade) is quite good on a hot day. The Berry Weiss tastes more like a cooler than a beer but it's pretty tasty, as it the Sunrise Wheat. I believe they are all lower in alcohol (less than 5%) so, you can enjoy it all day. I'm planning on taking a case of Summer Shandy and Chill to the Buffett concert in Philly on the 14th.

Dude, mix half a bottle of Berry wiess with half a bottle of Honey Wiess. it takes a little of the sweetness away. Not too bad! As far as the summer shandy goes ===

Speaking of Buffet, I hear he has his own beer. Its a lager called Land Shark. Has anyone tried it yet? If so, how did it taste.
