Not beer related but a friend brought some Ardbeg Uigeadail over to my place the other day. It's sold out in Ontario right now so it was quite a treat. It was probably the best Scotch I've ever had. Anyone else in here like scotch?

This guy.

Lagavulin is my go-to, enjoy my Macallan 18 on real special occasions.

My grandfather passed away last year and i asked for one of his old decanters. My uncle, who's acting like a greedy little female dog these days with the estate took all the waterford and leaded crysal, leaving one to me. Turns out the one I got was the one he actually used every day, the others were more or less ornamental.

I was really pleased - and that hot 18 year old sure looks good in it.

Edit: And yeah, I meant every day.

Lagavulin 16 is really nice but a little pricey to be an everyday scotch for me yet. I just started really getting into scotch about a year ago but so far I have been enjoying Islay scotches the most. Out of ones I've owned Laphroaig Quarter Cask, Lagavulin 16, Ardbeg 10, and Bowmore 12 are among my favourites. I also like the lighter ones like Glendronach 12 or Benromach 10 and the medium ones like HP12, etc though. I haven't really had many I didn't like to be honest lol.

Macallan 18 is probably not something within my reach for a while yet. I've never tried it but from everything I've heard it seems like a status scotch more than anything. It's probably not worth the $250 price tag to me.

Even as a go-to, the Lag will only come out once a week, max. 2-3 fingers. The Mac comes out when dad's in town, etc.

That Laphroaig is nice, and I do enjoy the Bowmore as well. I take a cask strength Macallan with me when camping as well. A LOT of fire in that one, but it's great by the campfire at night.

I like to have a drink or two on Friday and Saturday night, whether it be beer or scotch. That's usually it for me though. I like my liver. He's a good guy. That's enough for me to enjoy the drinks anyway. My bottles lasting longer is just a nice side effect. On special occasions (like visiting a new pub) I will go well over that self imposed limit though lol.

My two faves as well. Lagavulin is perfect.

I'm a decanter fan myself. Have nice little liquor cart in my living room stocked with a bunch.

You like bourbon too?

The macallan is definitely overpriced, scotch in general is it seems. I usually go for the macallan fine oak 15 yr old. Bit cheaper, but very good.

Not so much, actually. Rye is ok but the sweet/sour of burbon just doesn't do it for me. I like the dry heat and peat of a nice scotch, lets the sweetness compliment rather than dominate the palate. I know there are wonderful bourbons but I just can't get into them.

Ever have Forty Creek? It's no single malt scotch but it's a decent whisky. It's made slightly differently than most Canadian whiskys. They ferment and age each grain (corn, barley, rye) separately and mix prior to bottling. It seems to make a huge difference. Tastes a bit nutty with butterscotch and chocolate in there as well. It's definitely sweeter than a single malt and has nothing but a mild wine or port-like finish but it's nice, especially considering it's about $36 for a 40 of it here. That and Alberta Premium are the only whiskys I drink that aren't single malt scotches right now.

Back to beer.. I saw Harviestoun Ola Dubh at the LCBO today. I passed on it at $6 a bottle but I kind of regret it now. It's aged in Highland Park 12 barrels and it seems to be getting favourable reviews. There are only ~50 left in Toronto too so I better hurry up and buy at least one bottle.

Stone Brewery from SD makes a smoked porter, quite delicious (but a substantial beer). I'd think the chocolate/coffee notes in the Porter style might translate better.

Cardhu used to be my go-to Scotch... still is one of my all-time favs but the price went sky high a while back, up to $250/bottle... it's come down to around $150/bottle here in Ontario but that is still crazy.

I've got about 20 different Single Malts in my collection along with a slew of blends and ports...

Might have to take a browse and see what I'm in the mood for...

I'd have to place this particular hybrid style brew in the head scratching category....but in a good way. Unbelievably complex! Black as night in color with a tan head yet it yields a strong hop presence. I love when brewers push the envelope and come up with a completely unique beer. This little gem is the best one yet i've tried in this style. If your favorite beers are dark stouts and hoppy west coast IPA's this is certainly the beer for you.

It's an emerging stye in Cali, a couple local companies are putting out black IPAs. Everything Stone does is great, so I'm quite sure it was amazing.

Good beers. I prefer Propeller ESB over their IPA but you can't go wrong either way.

It's funny seeing that Anchor Beer. I just watched an old beer show with Michael Jackson from '89 (the beer/whisky reviewer, not the singer lol) and they showed Anchor Brewery quite a bit in the California section of the series. I ended up picking some up after seeing it. Haven't tried one yet though.

Here are some more readily available Ontario beers that I've really been liking:

The Denison's is one of the better Weissebier's I've had. Better than Hacker-Pschorr Weisse, Weihenstephaner Weisse, Schneider Weisse, and Paulaner Weisse imo. I like all those beers though. So tasty when I'm in the mood for something a bit lighter in taste than usual but not macro lager type tasteless lol.

I've had Rogue Brewer and a Black IPA from Southern Tier that I can't remember the name of. I enjoyed them a lot but they were pretty heavy and would make for a rough morning if you tried sessioning them. You pretty much have to treat them like they are wine.

That one you posted sounds good too. If they ever get it at The Only Cafe (local pub) I'd try it but we don't get many Stone beers here usually. Bar Volo or Beer Bistro would probably have it but I hate going downtown for a beer.
