Holy poop, 11 year olds are so much better than I remember my 11 year old days...even without the Michigan, they are really playing!
Nice goal. |

Pretty quiet in here. Just more of the same with the games tonight. Overtime and one goal games are everywhere. Can you imagine when it gets to the last 10 games and there will be a significant drop in goal scoring? Getting ready for the playoffs and positioning will make it harder to score. If Matthews wants to get to 70, he's going to have to start scoring more often within the next 3 weeks before the defensive play starts up. |

So the 8 goals and 12 points he has in the last 5 games isn’t enough?

From Jonas Siegel in the Athletic:
It’s time we start thinking about this Auston Matthews season a little differently. Not just as a great season. Not just as maybe the greatest season by a Leaf. But one of the greatest seasons, period, by anyone, ever.
Seriously. That’s not hyperbole.
Adjust for era and Matthews is on pace to have the second-best scoring season of all time. Only Brett Hull in the 1990-91 season scored it better than Matthews is scoring it right now — with 48 goals (!) in 52 games. |

That's fair.
Auston Matthews is something else really, what an amazing player.

Another gem from Siegel:
The Leafs need Bertuzzi to score too. They need him to lead the second wave of scoring behind the big four forwards. He’s paid to do so. The question is whether that’s still in him. Bertuzzi has scored 15 goals in his last 102 regular season games. |

It's a good article - goes on to add a lot more to support Matthews being MVP - even over Kucherov.
Another nugget:
What makes this season all the more remarkable, and all the more unprecedented, is that Matthews is scoring like this while defending like a champ — like a legitimate Selke Trophy contender.
Hull, Ovechkin, Lemieux, Gretzky, those guys were never that. Nobody was ever that.

Lemieux scored 85
Gretzky scored 87 and 92.
Not sure how they "adjust" for era, but the above still has to be ahead of AM.
AM's current season could easily be the best in the past 30 years
Which is pretty amazing |

And I'd just like to add a personal observation:
A lot of us amateurs think of a "Selke guy" as someone really good in their own end.
Matthews is phenomenal defensively in the offensive zone (and neutral zone).
I think this needs to be given a lot more consideration - I'd rather have a guy strip pucks in the offensive zone than the defensive zone - to me, that's better defence. |
