Vegas can even afford Guentzel and Smith with Stone on LTIR until game 83. Hope Dubas moves Guentzel on the elusive sign and trade for a huge package.

Here we go again. League needs to come up with something to address this.

Suggested fix - reduce the LTIR cap relief to where you only get 25% cap relief, or a minimum of league minimum salary, unless the injury is caused by an illegal play by an opposing player (any penalty, fine or suspension) in which case you get 100%.

Another idea may be luxury tax that carries over to the following season cap hit. HArd to enforce salary cap through playoffs as they can't make trades to reduce, only demotions, waivers, etc...

The Vegas Knights farm system has exactly zero players who excite me.

Draft picks late in the first round aren't that great either. It's quite possible, even likely, that what would be viewed as a good return from Vegas with picks and prospects makes any real NHL impact.

Salary cap counts in the playoffs?

So Montreal is no longer the leading candidate to trade for Guentzel? The more that I thought about that it wasn't making sense...a team already out of the playoff race outbids everyone else to add an injured American-born player that needs to waive his NTC and maybe plays 10-12 games before leaving as a UFA.

I'll keep my eye on Vegas now.

No, the salary is the salary...No exceptions for injury. Or...Salary cap doesn't "go away" in the post season.

LOL 'the injury to Mark Stone'. This guy has the same injury around the same time every year. Only a joke league like the NHL would allow Vegas' continuous abuse of the cap. Meanwhile Stone's at home practicing his pained grimace in front of a mirror for the playoffs.

Simple solution to this charade. The team you put on the ice in playoffs must be Cap . Easy fixCompliant.

There is only one area of LTIR that they need to fix. That is as soon as the player is cleared to play he needs to be activated. If that is 3 days before the playoffs, then so be it. If they can't due to cap space, then that player should be deemed ineligible for the playoffs. Not sure how they would enforce that but that's the only area I have an issue with.

Not feasible. The NHL wants a quality product. Teams can't be left shorthanded in the playoffs due to a lack of cap space. You want to be able to increase the roster size and expand available depth for the playoffs.

Having cap space doesn't mean you have an inferior team. I think Philly has $23M of space and are in a playoff spot. Florida is 2nd or 3rd in the league and have $19M of space. Canucks have $7.6M. Boston has $4.6M. Winnipeg has $5.2M. These are legit contenders. It's how you use that space. Which is why this deadline is going to be crazy.

Flyers have 6.7M of cap space. The majority of NHL teams that are in a playoff position, don't have a lot of cap space. I didn't say anything about having an inferior team. Things happen and players get injured.

you can still trade for these players if your players are injured... you just cant ice a team that exceeds the salary cap...
