And they don't have the defense prospect depth to include in trades either. - kingcong39

just hoard all the undersized forwards |

Sens have 53 points. Excellent leader and locker room guy 😂😂 - Sabretooth9
Show me anything Mitts has done that compares to Brady. Just because the Senators suck doesn't mean anything, Sabres blow to. |

If they picked a defenseman instead of that goaltender, they'd have much more leverage in trades. - kingcong39

If they showed a willingness to trade for a rental, they could acquire half the league.
If you want to say they should have ponied up for Chychrun, then sure I can understand that
But Tanev was advertised to the whole league for months and essentially went for a second round pick and a guy while having 75% of his contract retained.
Sean freaking Monahan even got a first rounder |

Well it is the Sabres! Should change the name to the "Buffalo Disfunctionals" and have a Picture of Terry and Kevyn High Fiving on the Front of the Jerseys instead of the Swords |

The guy as you called him is a recent 2nd round draft selected defenseman.
Sabres have any of those? Are they trading their only one who they just picked? |

Didn't know about the rules change above, not that it matters, as teams always figure a way around it.
>>> Perfect breakdown from Owen on how exactly the retainment works. There's a new wrinkle - teams can't trade cap space for future considerations any longer, so unsigned pick Cole Brady had to go from NJD to CGY (then to Dallas) to make it all happen.

the bigger issue IMO is the guys top 5 gm picked in the second round
Poltapov
Kisakov
and Leinonen don't look like they will sniff the nhl as of now

Absolutely.
They talked openly about thinking they had an edge with their Russian scouting.

Poltapov was a whiff forsure. I remember loving Zellweger and Stankoven. But then again, Adams would have been burned at the stake if he took another short king.
Leinonen looks like a huge whiff.
Peterka was a home run.
Whalberg and Strbak certainly look the part so far.
Kisakov looks like a long shot but most guys ar the end of the second round are

With the D still on the Board and the way some have progressed, that Leinonen pick looks really bad. |

Devils deadlime cap space equals $8M.
Sabres equals ateast 3 times that.
Devils, while trying to win, decided to spend roughly $250K in salary to buy a 2026 4th round pick that they can either keep or use in another deal.
Sabres say they're good, no thanks.
Hardly a big deal, but another example that has me convinced they're on an internal budget per Pegula, and there's no way he'd authorize a $250K expenditure for a 4th round pick in 2 years. |

My general rule of thumb is if Jerry Forton cries tears of joy because somebody listened to him about a pick, I immediately assume the pick sucks. |

I had no problem with them picking a goalie there
perhaps it should have been one of the other 2 goalies
we did not have levi, or portillo under contract
kokko does look like a much better prospect

Many were big on Zellweger for the Sabres pick.
They ignored the obvious choice.
If he's in their prospect pool right now, there's a host of opportunities he would open for them. |

In a perfect world yes they take Zellweger >Poltapov and one of Casey or Luneau over Leinonen.
With that being said, they still have the ammunition to do whatever they please |
