Agreed.
Now we find out what's cooking in the rest of the market. If Tanev is a 2nd and an "ok" prospect ...that should make the rest of the rentals affordable.
Or does Tree have a McCabe-type deal up his sleeve. - The Law
Or maybe we have an own rental?
Timmins is right handed no?
With only 2 picks i believe in the top 2 rounds the next three years.....i feel like tdl could be quiet for the leafs for a while.

I think at a minimum they deal a mid-round pick for a Dumba or Johnson type. |

Who's the big fat Oilers commentator? His eyes look closed when he's on camera and he's a total homer. He makes Oiler games tough to watch. |

Honestly, the original report came from Eric Francis ..a beat writer for the Flames ..and the report doesn't really say what people have been reporting. It simply said Conroy would have some fear that losing a trade with Toronto would come with a lot of drama but even that was pure speculation. Weekes was just repeating that same "twitter". Welcome to social media. If Conroy was really hesitant to deal with the Leafs then the gazzilion reports of them talking about Zadarov, Tanev, etc... wouldn't be happening at all.
I'm with you ...I doubt it mattered to Conroy at all. What mattered was the Leafs weren't prepared to beat the Dallas offer. Best offer got Tanev. - The Law
I thought I'd heard there was something to do with Edwards, the team's owner, not wanting to deal with Treliving and particularly not wanting to do anything to help Toronto.
Earlier in the season it was reported that Conroy and Treliving had an excellent working relationship and should have been able to get a deal done - but it would seem that something else may have interrupted that - other than just a "better offer" since neither offer that came along has been that outstanding.
One thing to note, if I recall correctly - on the Tanev trade, it's only the second time in Calgary's history they've retained salary on a deal. So there may be a natural reluctance there.

Kyper and Bourne spoke about this
The thought was that if TO wins the trade, you will never hear the end of it, with the size of the Leafs media. Hence, the fear in dealing with TO.

Bob Stauffer.
It's not just him. Listen to _everyone_ on the Oilers broadcast. They all have to constantly pump the Oilers tires. It's like that Twilight Zone episode where they're all afraid of being wished away into the cornfield.
I saw a game a month ago where some kid - 24 or 25 or something like that - was playing his first NHL game and they had a 4 minute segment talking about how great the kid was. He played like 5 minutes in the game, if that. You _never_ saw him. |

It's bizarre because it's not even in the same ballpark.
You'd be trading Zadorov, Tanev, Hanifin or Lindholm as examples of who they have had on the market . . . they are all expiring and not resigning in Calgary. I know the Gilmour deal was terrible for them but it was a hockey trade not a rebuilding trade.
If trading Tanev and Zadorov both would have netted them a 1st and a better prospect than Grushnikov, it's very likely a better deal for your team than a 2nd, two 3rds, a 5th and Grushnikov. When you're rebuilding quality over quantity matters.

You still whining about this?
He did what every GM does, moved some pieces including draft picks to make some trades. Some worked out, some didn't.
Gawd.

I don't buy any of it ...it's drama coming from one reporter. Lindholm winning in Vancouver would be no different ....maybe worse (if they really cared about that).
But I agree, I think cash retention was a big variable ...especially back in November as opposed to now. |

You really think so? I watch a decent amount of the Oilers due to geographical proximity and I've always found their commentators to be bearable. Definitely not Stauffer, but Singh and DeBrusk seem good. I know some Oiler fans that HATE how neutral they are.
