This is the most Canucks thing ever.
Dude turned down $12M x 8 so the known cost to resign the guy will bring down his overall return value because he is NOT McDavid, MacKinnon or Matthews. But he wants their type of payday meaning that THIS year represents his only year of guaranteed upside value. Unless he wants out of VAN and will sign somewhere else for $10.5M x 8 which would also be the most Canucks ki!!’lck in the teeth in recent memory. That said, if we must play the trade game…only one way to score on this year’s start and save face moving forward would to come out the other side somehow more marketable…
3 Team Deal
To NJD : C Pettersson
G J. Markstrom
D N. Hanifin
2024 4th/NJD
To CGY: G V. Vanecek
2025 1st/NJD
2026 1st/VAN
To VAN: C J. Hughes
D L. Hughes
2026 3rd/VAN - 13of39
There is NO (frank)ing way NJ would trade Jack Hughes unless the return includes either McKinnon or McDavid coming the other way. Teams just don't trade franchise cornerstones. And they likley wouldn't trade his brother as they'd wamt to keep Jack happy. This is an awful trade. Pass the bong Dude, you've had enough |

Flames give up Markstrom, Hanifin, and a 3rd for 2-1sts? I’d say Canucks jump at that.

These greed issues with the money involved are ruining all sports When is enough enough Time for sanity not insanity Greed will never end It will kill all sports eventually The game used to be so pure in its beauty of skill and integrity and now it is just about MONEY AND GREED. I say to fans find something else to do with your family and friends Let all the spoiled brats do their thing with the GREED
Yeah, because it’s the athletes that are ruining “beauty of skill and integrity” by demanding their fair share.
It’s the athletes that put their bodies on the line. It’s the athletes that have to deal with the long-term damage.
It’s the athletes that were getting screwed for decades by the Alan Eaglesons of the world who were in the pockets of the owners and hosing the athletes who, coincidentally, possess all the “beauty of skill and integrity” to begin with.
Time for bed, gramps. Enough bootlicking for one day. |

Jersey takes on another (roughly) million in Cap by taking MacDermid from Colorado. A 7th and a prospect go the other way which is more than I would have expected. We'll miss you Dermy. Avs obviously clearing Cap space.

The point is, ladies and gentleman, that greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right, greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind. And greed, you mark my words, will not only save the NHL, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA. Thank you very much. - Zezel

A 24 year old, 25-30 goal scorer (when healthy) center
A 23 year old, 50 point two-way center
A 10th overall pick prospect
and another top 10 pick.
I wouldn't accept it but what was the better off here? - AlfieisKing
Too bad none of the players listed match the above...

There's also a fixed amount of money that can be fixed to ice a team.
When enough players demand "their share", the team has trouble icing lines with depth - and thus become 1st-round exits in the playoffs.

The idea you think little tiny tyke Jack Hughes would net you MacK or McJesus is hilarious.
This deal accomplishes a few things: Thrusts Jersey into Cup Contention right now with a need to add EP’s new deal they can bridge Mercer, Holtz is on an ELC still. Hanifin likely walks in the Summer but Hamilton will return and they’ve got ELC talent on the blue line as well. Having shored up the net they can really go all in for 3-4 years before a re tool commences.
Vancouver, about to be a laughingstock even when they’re winning, instead goes from the home of the Sedin Twins to the Hughes’ House, netting themselves continued contention, greater exposure and a better profile across the league moving forward and they save face while also sending the message: we’re a destination franchise. You don’t wanna be here? We don’t want you.
And calgary prevents the single draft class trap by spreading out a pair of 1st’s across the next few seasons while having a partner to help develop Dustin Wolf or act as a cautionary tale for him. The return is less on Hanifin than had they sold him off in a separate deal, but you get out from under Markstrom’s deal and walk away with 2 1st’s which, may sound better than it plays in the long run, but the Calgary rebuild doesn’t seem to be a quick one… |

This could be close, but I think Calgary gets more than just a 1st for each player plus a goalie back. I think they’re the ones that don’t do this. |

Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed by the team but Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli reports (Twitter link) that the deal is worth $92.8MM in total for an AAV of $11.6MM. |

So maybe the trade rumour was just typical trade negotiation tactics? Funny that so many insiders fell for that. Notice Nylander didn't get traded either... |

Didn’t say Jack would get us Nate or McDavid 1 for 1. Said they’d have to be included in a package meaning there would be more included on both sides. I still wouldn’t do this trade regardless if you ‘think’ it thrusts us into contention now.
