Or perhaps those team simply didn't have the talent to win. It's a known fact that Torts usually gets the most of which he has to work with and that fact can't be disputed.

It's not a known fact. It's a narrative and a perception. What Tortorella is really good at doing is taking a team that lacks cohesion and teaching and coaching them to play with structure and checking. What he isn't good at is taking a team further than that. Which is why his teams always hit a predictable plateau and then when the players as a whole, realize that his methods and style of play are not going to result in more, then he loses the team. He lacks the high level ability that the best coaches in the league have with in game strategy and offensive attack. He's really bad at player development and heavily favors certain types of players over others. Which is why he often has huge misses with talented players.

And that leads to worse draft results which worsens the lack of talent... it's a negative feedback loop.

This year and in this scenario, with the possibility of missing the playoffs, that might mean them picking somewhere in the mid-teens as opposed to the twentys. That’s not realistically much of a difference.

The point is that the young players on the Flyers likely aren't going to benefit one way or the other by playing in the PO's this spring. The ones who are clutch will emerge as clutch when the time comes. It's not some poop you develop.

The focus should be on assembling as much talent as possible, not aiming for playoff experience for the kids.

- Tomahawk

So we want the young players to play, except when it gets in the way of a rebuild? Frost being scratched at the start of the season, there was an uproar and by him sitting got into the way of his development. Brink, same thing. Being scratched and sent down, uproar. Torts was screwing with his development. Now you'd like to offer no playoffs. Playoffs aren't a big deal, there is a team to rebuild, which offers no playing of young players on the highest of stages. Doesn't this take away from young kid's development? I mean I've heard this uproar all season.

It absolutely can.

He usually gets a team to overperform in it's first 2 seasons and then said team slowly devolves into a grinding mess of mediocrity over the next few years.

- BINGO!

Yep, the players realize that playing game in and game out with max effort just to compete while he overplays grinders who can't score doesn't take you to the promise land. The marginal improvement leads to less high level talent acquired.

Latest quotes from DB from an AP article that just came out. "I'd have to say it's a good problem to have because if the team doesn't play the way they have we're not getting the attention from other teams about our players. Everything's on the table, and we're trying to figure out what's best for the future". Take from that what you want.

I wont have a problem if they don't trade Laughton, Frost, Atkinson or any player with term at the deadline. Those are players you SHOULD wait for the best deal possible and if what you want isn't met, they can be dealt at the draft or revisited at the deadline next year etc.

With Walker and Seeler, when you see the contracts and term they are apparently looking for, you trade them for the best deal you are offered. End of statement. In fact I would take them walking for nothing (at least you get cap space) rather than signing them to those contracts.

- MBFlyerfan

This statement is right on target with how this deadline should be approached. While I agree with the last sentence, you could have hit submit after "End of statement". As much as I enjoy live playoff hockey I see a playoff run being five or six wins at most. I long to go to my second Cup parade (we needed doctors' notes to miss school in '75), but even the optimist in me knows it won't be in 2024.

I've spent the last couple months super agitated by posters (on all boards) and podcasters consistently hammering on the "same old flyers brass" and "I guess the rebuild is over" poop. The whole time I was waiting for this deadline (and off-season) to circle back and enjoy the crow buffet. I REALLY LIKE Danny and Keith Jones as dudes. Keith Jones is legit one of my favorite people related to Philadelphia sports. When they all continued to double down on the fact they were gonna keep their eye on the prize and build this team the right way, I wanted to believe them SO MUCH.

I've been a Flyers fan for a long time, and while i've been frustrated I've never truly felt betrayed before. I know the trade deadline isn't the ONLY place to make moves for the future, but if they not only fail to get interesting assets at the deadline, but also RESIGN benign players for larger than necessary contracts....i'm gonna feel cheated and lied to. Fingers crossed DB comes through with a 4th QTR comeback on Friday.

JIC....anyone with Photoshop skills able to make a PHILADELPHIA LIARS logo?

The hiring of Tortorella was a dead giveaway. In a way, the new management tripled down on past admins failings by hiring him. To bring “accountability” and a “standard”. In other words they viewed it as a complete failing of the players, which shamed management.
