Baseball's TV ratings have fallen off a cliff, it used to be the US national sport ... fans are not stupid.
Why watch or buy tickets when your team has next to no chance to compete because others can outspend you for players by a large margin?

This is how you kill a sport, hockey is barely more popular than NASCAR in the US ... what do you think will happen in smaller markets?

PS: On a personal basis, I haven't watched a single baseball game since the Expos left, I couldn't name a single baseball player anymore.

But I really don’t think the NHL is following that same path with salaries.

There’s a hard cap, much different than the MLB cap..

yes, I knew this is a combination you don't like very much (and I have to admit that does end up not looking all that good very often for some reason). but sometimes it can be done right.
