Johansen's injury caught the Flyers off guard? - BaronVonShiznit
This whole injury thing seems like a convenient way to let everybody save some face.
Danny was already in front of the cameras on trade day saying there was no chance RJ would be joining the team. This was prior to RJ arriving in Philly to see any doctors.
I call BS. |

Agreed. Whether it’s bad attitude or decline in play, Johansen has one year left on his deal and his 13 goals would be tied for 5th on the team. I think at minimum you have to give him a look. Refusing to do so says to me, Torts didn’t like a 23 year old Johansen, why would he want a 31 year old Johansen, which I think is unfair. Totally different story if Johansen was a UFA this summer. |

I was thinking this was on Johansen setting the stage for avoiding a potential buyout.

I also find it kind of odd that the GM has no idea if a player he traded for has been in contact with the head coach |

I think that is just a way to avoid the topic of the past history between the two.

Man. If it weren't for the teams below us in the Metro struggling so mightily, we'd be long buried in this playoffs race. I honestly can't see them getting any points in the next five games the way they are playing. - Hextall271
I think they can manage about 3 points during this stretch. One overtime loss and sneak a victory somewhere. Let’s not forget they played one of the top teams (Boston) pretty well, with the exception of a 3-4 minute span. That’s more than Toronto does against them and they’re supposed to be cup contenders. They practically lay down vs the Bruins with each meeting, think they lost 7 straight to them. Maybe I’m hoping for a miracle but, like you said the other teams are crapping the bed too. Tough task for sure, but they have won games this season against some of the better clubs. |

Could be.
Probably the Flyers/Danny would like to manage the optics of Torts having the power to repeatedly bury guys he doesn't like (Hayes, TDA, Allison, now Johansen) too. It's one thing if a coach is benching guys... it's another if it looks like he's running roughshod over the GM. Torts already made Chuck look like an absolute fool. I'm sure Danny is trying not to look weak. |

Would be nice if the club would grace us mere mortals with injury updates on the D. You’d think, the way they partner with and encourage sports betting, that, like the NFL, they’d be required to give out real reports.
But oh well. |

I thought GMDB’s choice of words was interesting. “Claimed” to have an injury, and we “found one”. The implication that this was hidden from the Avs and Flyers both and that that there was/is skepticism on behalf of the Flyers. Since these teams have rules to follow and need to always deal in good faith with one another, I have little doubt that Flyers front office and Avs front office have spoken and compared notes. There’s probably more to the story, but like with Quitter Gauthier, we may never find out if the player won’t address it. Definitely fishy.

Are you talking about the recent Boston game? Credit for not quitting on the game and fighting back but the Flyers were overall defensively a disaster in that game. The Bruins could've put up a 10 spot in that game. It was more than just a 3-4 minute span. The Flyers need to tighten up defensively.

I agree that Danny is trying to be his own man in this scenario. Eventually he will need to remove Torts from the decision tree if he truly wants to be his own man.

I doubt RJ is that opposed to a buyout. Yes, it will cost him 2.67 million, but he’d be a UFA and should be able to land a deal somewhere for one year and at least 1.5 million.
I think, for a guy who’s been making 8 million per for quite a few years, giving up 1.1-1.2 million isn’t a big deal for giving him the ability to sign where he wants. |

Maybe but with the cap crunch, he's the kind of guy that winds up without any offers.

The authority? Sure. But it would be an idiotic move to remove the coach from some of these decisions. They have to work as a team. Different focus but they absolutely have a huge impact on each other. So the "real man" comments are kinda ludicrous in my opinion. I want my coach and GM working hand in glove as much as possible. |

Agreed with the defensive side of that. The Flyers can only win when playing sound defensively, no fire power with the O. But, it was 2-2 at the start of the third. |

It wasn't a bad effort, but they can't seem to defend or kill penalties anymore with the current D corps. They really needed to get a point vs Boston on Saturday. They do not match up well with the Leafs of late and get cooked by their skilled forwards. It would be epic to get any points on Tuesday and I don't expect this to happen. We'll likely see the same result as last week. |

A coach isn’t working with his GM when he blatantly acts to lower the value of players (Hayes, TDA) during a season when the team had zero chance of making the playoffs.
Torts does what he wants, period. |
