I get you're a chronic Keefe apologist and obsessively making excuses for him is part of the deal, if you need me to let you believe the head coach doesn't have the final say I can totally do that for you. - joel878

Everybody do this and join in :
Close your eyes and focus your mind's eye on the game. Imagine a bright ball of white light around Matthews as he enters the zone. Put all of your mental strength into the ball of white light. Concentrate on it and picture Matthews firing a laser shot that goes through the goalie and dents the twine with authority. You have to want it. Manifest it. It will happen.
Matthews will go Super Saiyan and put this team on his back and lead them to victory.
Or, those edibles are kicking in hard. |

Totally. Why does a restaurant even have any other staff besides the cook. |

But he's not wrong. Keefe has culpability here - he drives the overall strategy, player management, decisions - he also had a key role in deciding which assistant coaches were hired for him and how their systems should operate within his overall system.
That said Van Ryn and Boucher each have their specific fingerprints on the failings of the PK and PP this year, too. Moreso when you compare them with Carberry's recent successes - so you know the systems the assistants employ do vary by assistant regardless of who the head coach is.

Marner is a top-5 and arguably top-3 right wing in the league. Any team would miss a guy with his puck skills.

I can't imagine any sane GM or coach looking at Boucher's systems and saying : Hire that guy, we need that here.

And his elite defence skillz…
He’s already a two-time NHL first line all-star.
Are there any other RW’er with that status still playing?

That's not going to change his mind. I am not sure any team with 10 million in cap missing is a playoff team. |

You said everything that needed to be said at Keefe has culpability here. If he can't have the right personnel making the right decisions, he's not the guy to lead the bench, is he. If he can't assess that it's a problem and step in where he needs to step in, that's a problem.
Being in charge of a staff is knowing when to lead and when to defer. You don't get to be in that spot and go "well that guy made a bad decision", you're the one who let him make the decision. |
