I can really see Tortorella doing something like that but Couturier was named captain on 2/14. There have been about 14 games since then. Why did he wait that long? It followed a familiar pattern with Tortorella. Cut ice time, demote down in lines, cut ice time further then a scratch. - MJL
Maybe he was hoping Coots was going to figure it and and correct whatever the issue is. You know, let him play through it.

Kudos to you for posting something that will stir the pot, but you can't honestly believe this BS, do you? - jd250
Do I believe the team appointed a Captain and Torts didn't want it? Yes. DO I believe the rest, not really.
Though when I hear there has been no communication between Torts and Coots since he was named Captain, I am understandably curious.

You take the two points and run obviously but this is game that more time than not, the Flyers will lose. The Flyers are a defensive team and they gave up way too much. They were more competitive and played better but it's nothing to celebrate. Flyers came out on the better end of puck luck. Two seeing eye goals that got through traffic and went in and the Leafs hit at least 5 posts. Flyers hit a couple. Most nights, the Flyers will lose that game. There is also the Nylander play with the open net where the puck luckily hit York when he wasn't even facing the shooter. - MJL
I agree this is the type of game they will lose more often than not. I give credit to the players for stepping up but they grinded and found a way to win.
How about big Nic D with a whopping 5:21 of ice time. Surely, they could have used Coots on the dot last night. |

Whether a player stays in the lineup or not is completely up to them. Torts has laid down the standard; he will play the players that are playing the best hockey. In the past 10 games, has Couturier been the best center on this team? The second best center? Even the 3rd best center? His ice time was cut and his responsibility lessoned so he could have the time to work on his game and improve. Did he improve? I don't like that Couts was scratched, but IMO his game has been off pretty much the entire season. He is slow, behind the play often, and losing more than his normal share of puck battles. His face-offs have been the only saving grace up to this point. I suspect he will be back in the lineup soon, but in the meantime I'm sure the message was sent loud and clear to the locker room, raise your game this time of year or you sit. And I love it! - jd250

How did Frost look? I’d say he has the goods…. - Flyfly
I think he played well. 2 pts. He should never be out of the lineup as I think he will continue to improve with more playing time/confidence. |

I think Frost has played two really strong games back to back against two top teams. I hope he continues to do this because the Flyers need it badly. My only critique is Frost has got to be more careful and not take dumb penalties. With the PK struggling, they almost cost the team the game last night. - jd250
He played very well, My hope is he keeps playing like he is bc they will need him (as you stated) |

Danny Briere on the #flyers decision to healthy scratch captain Sean Couturier tonight: "I can tell you one thing -- with John Tortorella, it doesn't matter who it is. That's what he's known for. He treats everybody the same way." |

I'm tellin ya all! Torts is a genius! He scratched Coots to create confrontation! He wanted TK to be his captain, but was overruled. So now he has a mellow captain and he decided to light a fire under his arse. Coots will come out with his hair on fire next game! Book it Dano!! |

I'm very glad they won (on my b day no less!) but in reality, had even half of those posts they hit gone in, we lose that. What you will also notice, is how hard of a slog it was to hold in the late third when we could not win a single faceoff. Tavares was eating us ALIVE. Couts has struggled for sure, but of late, his faceoffs have been better. At minimum, we missed that aspect of his game. We very much got lucky to hold on for that win in the 3rd. |

I think Laughts, Frost and Poehling have all played much better than Couts in this last stretch. |

Bill, how do you think Couts is handling sitting a game? I'm sure as a player he wants to be in the lineup so he is disappointed and a bit irked. But is he handling it the way a 'C' on the team should handle it, setting the right example especially for the younger players? |

Yup, definitely a weak point right now, however obtaining just 1 top center slots everyone where they should be and turns this into a strength. |
