I’m not outraged either, all I hear is this is a rebuild, this is a rebuild, play the young players. Well last night against a top team and in as playoff race, all the young players in the org that could play did play. Yet people will full complain, can’t make it up! Oh and all the young players looked really good last night. - jd250
There is a right way and a wrong way to react to being benched/scratched and Coots and his agent just demonstrated the wrong way…maybe the worst way. He complained to the media and his agent said something besides “no comment”. This is the kind of “me first” culture the team has been trying to get rid of. Unfortunately, no one wants Coots at the money he makes, so we’re stuck with him. Strip him of his captaincy and move on. He has what, one goal in the last 27 games? That’s a third of the season and absolutely pathetic…he needs to look in the mirror.
That’s hockey. Plenty of games they probably should have won and got no luck. It all evens out. - Flyers1218
I agree but in context, let's not pretend that anything was fixed or that scratching Couturier was some magical coaching move that elevated the team to a win. Same warts were still there.

So now Couturier is a me first player? How laughable, yea, I hope they do strip Couturier of the captaincy and that Tortorella is behind that. Whatever gets him closer to getting fired.

Head games, should give long lasting results. That's how you build a team capable of winning the cup. With head games. What's going to happen first? The Flyers get to the point of being a legitimate cup contender or they get tired of Tortorella's head games? - MJL
I get the guy can be a total jerk, but some are absolutely trying to skew the narrative because they dislike Torts so much. It even comes out in Bill’s comments/tweets (who has infinite more access than I’ll ever have to the organization).
We all get it. His shelf-life is short. Some players can’t wait to get out from under him. Some will avoid coming here altogether. But the guy wins. Pretty much everywhere he goes. He’s the best coach they’ve had in a long time and the team plays hard.
Sucks for Coots that he’s been benched. Hate to see it. But I haven’t watched him play this year and said definitively that he deserves big minutes or to dress every game. Winning is all that matters and they won last night. To say the coach deserves no credit for the win, but would brunt all the blame if they lost seems pretty incredulous.

The warts are that 4/6 of their starting defense is gone. Nothing more, nothing less.

If every player that was playing poorly was held to the same standard I would not have a problem with it. That is not the case. This wreaks of Torts possibly destroying this team for a short term gain.

No, he doesn't win. I guess it depends on what your definition of winning is. He hasn't come close to winning, at least in my definition in his last 16 seasons as a head coach. Soon to be 17. He is the most overrated coach in the NHL. He is stuck on the past and old methods that have a limit to how successful a team will be with his philosophies and methods.

Your looking long view, I'm just talking now to light a fire under them and get in the POs. The head games don't last, it's a short term "shot in the arm". They've played well enough to have a PO spot for 50 days, if they lose it, I feel that does more long term damage into next season than Tort's head games now.
That was in 2004, when the league was completely different and his current archaic methods and strategies worked. Since then in 16 seasons as a head coach, soon to be 17 years, he only taken a team past the second round of the playoffs once.
Honestly, what is the goal? To improve the team structurally, make them harder to play and compete for the playoffs? If so, then he's your guy. I personally want more and he is the wrong coach if you want more then that and aren't easily satisfied.

Who has played as consistently poorly as Coots over the last few months? The writers are trying to find excuses for him, that’s how bad he’s been. The only guy worse is Atkinson. He’s been benched. Nick D… benched. Staal… benched.
Guys are going to have good games and bad games. But the guys that have mostly been bad have been sitting.
The only one I don’t like is Brink. He needs to play.
