He needs to land the assets via free agency without giving up assets to aquire them. That’s really the biggest issue imo. I believe it’s why he blinked first on Horvat and gave up assets to aquire the right to sign him long term because he’s had problems luring Girioux, Panarin, Gaudreau, Kadri etc to sign via free agency. - kindlyrick
I don't recall a single report that he was ever trying for Giroux. In fact, everyone had him going home to Ottawa after his stint in Florida.
Gaudreau flat out said he never even talked to the Islanders after he got booed with CBJ at UBS and couldn't figure out why.
Panarin is the only one that there was any credible reporting on the Islanders pursuing him. |

So the Islanders either get rejected or do not even try? Guess some players have to fit to Lou’s liking. |

I mean two of them they definitely didn't even try on. The only unknown on that list for me is Kadri and I don't recall seeing anything seriously linking him to the Islanders outside of writers suggesting he could be a fit. Panarin was definitely sought after, that's out there.
But Gaudreau literally said he never even spoke to them.

"I was talking to my coach after the third shift, and I was like, 'I don't get it,'" Gaudreau told ESPN. "I didn't talk to [the Islanders] once throughout the whole free agency." |

Missed the last two games and I guess I didn't miss much. Safe to say tonight is a must win game as they are in free fall. If they miss the playoffs they have to shake things up and by that I mean lou, interesting that he got Roy and I assume a gm would want his own coaching hire |

I remember Johnny had no idea why he was getting heat. I guess he was not in Lou’s clique? Lou feels comfortable with vets like MM, Cal, and Palms. He does not seem to understand this is a speed and skill league now and it’s no longer the trap NHL. |

We normally do not see someone being both GM and coach. I would hate to lose Roy, but Lou needs to go. If that means Roy has to go then so be it. |

I don’t dislike Roy but I’m not really sure why anyone would hate to lose him. Not sure what he’s done to deserve that. I think the lineup is the real problem but I haven’t seen anything from Roy that makes me enamored with him. Is it the new coach luster? 😂 |

Roy shows promise, but he is no lock at this point. If it is true he is putting Barzal with Lee and Fasching, that is a concerning move. |

Almost like he doesn't have any real options the way the roster is constructed and that's not his fault |

I still do not put Barzal with those two. |

Columbus pays Gaudreau $9.75 MM per season for the next several seasons. Is his 11 goals and 40 assists, and -22 worth it? I mean he's a good player, but I can understand why Lou might not want to bid $10 MM for the guy.
Free agents generally get overpaid, if they're any good, because there are multiple bidders. I think someone suggested earlier that the Isles should dump most of their players and build thru free agency. It's just not practical in a cap world. Teams are better off trying to build through the draft (which requires some luck), and then fill in with trades and free agents when the cap allows. Teams need to be lucky and draft some young NHL-ready talent, because that brings down their average cap hit per player significantly.

Yeah I mean I’m not going to argue who they went after vs who they didn’t. It’s obvious I have no proof it’s all my opinion based on the isles anemic PP and all the aforementioned were PP1 guys. You’d have to think Lou inquired about all, but none ended up here for whatever the reason. The similarity I was trying to address is that no top UFA’s have signed here July 1st.

I like him better than Lane, but I don't think he's been coach long enough to be fairly evaluated.
I'm not attached to anyone at this point. No one should be safe if losing them will help the team. |

No question FA’s are way overpaid. The Islanders have not put enough into scouting though. I think the Islanders do need to build more through the draft. They obviously have no clue on signing good UFA’s. |

It’s clearly a demotion for whatever reason. When you’re losing a good coach doesn’t stand pat like Lane Lambert or Jack Capuano.
I’ll judge Patty Roy after a full season next year. I can’t judge him on 10-15 games with an inherited sub par roster. |

What has Barzal done to deserve a demotion? 69 points so far not enough? Standing pat is one thing and putting your best player with Lee and Fasching is another thing. |

SCOUTING!!!!!! Magic word. Look at the Bruins who’ve drafted Bergeron, Marchand, Mcavoy, Debrusk, Pastrnak. Solid NHLers and some intricate parts of their cup teams. There’s no one on the isles drafted in the last 20 years on the level of Bergeron, Marchand or Pastrnak. I don’t count Tavares as he was a first overall. The drafting needs to improve |

Maybe Lou just passed on guys and didn’t wanna pay up. But if you had 10.5 million to throw at Tavares, where’s that 10 million dollar player? |

I think he’s being demoted for whatever reason. Clearly Roy isnt happy with his play. Who knows. Maybe Roy is just looking to spread out the scoring. I can’t fault for changing lines after 5 or 6 losses |

Islanders are too good to bother with scouting even though Lou’s 3 Cups are mostly from scouting. Some feel the odds are not good in terms of picks, but some teams like Boston and now the Rangers have made it work. |

I suggested the isles sign 2-3 UFA’s. I also made reference to their inability to land a top asset July 1st
