yep, he's one of 2 vets on defense, and a local boy happy to be here. we all agree.
but if you want to trade a dman for help upfront.... you won't get anything of value unless you trade Matheson or Guhle. and Guhle is not going anywhere.
that leaves Matheson who like you were saying is on a good contract so he could fetch a good return imo, and I mean a legit top6 forward.
then you sign another vet dman on July first, a guy like Savard or Edmundson... not necessarly a top dog. just a good vet. - fidopro
damn lol. I could be wrong but I don't know if teams would be willing to trade away an established top-6 player or a prospect that is almost guaranteed to become one to acquire Matheson's services... I mean I like him but the guy does have his flaws, he isn't top pair material on a competitive team. |

If we look at the Habs contracts ... at the end of next season a lot of contracts (and retained money) are coming off the books.
Seems to me like HuGo may be planning for that time period to really shake this team's make up ... or maybe I'm just imagining things. |

dmen who can reach 50-60 points and who skate like Matheson are pretty rare Pat.
I agree he is not a top paring guy on a good team, but me, if I was a contender and needed a #3dman I would not hesitate one second to trade away a top6 forward to acquire him. especially with the contract he is on.
it is much easier to find a winger on July 1st than a dman like Matheson. even with all his flaws. |

I dunno man, I'm not so convinced about that. I guess it's all gonna depend on how many guys that fit the same kind of profile as Matheson are available on the trade block, and on how many teams are gonna be in need of a puck-moving dman at the time of making the trade.

How about during next year's playoff run (trade deadline)? ... some teams usually pay a high price at that time for a good defenseman.
And Matheson is under contract for another 2 years after this one. |

yeah, but I think (and hope) if the habs are in a playoffs spot around the TDL they might consider simply keeping him...
playoff experience is very valuable, I wouldn't take that away from this group or diminish their chances if they're actually winning games. |

I really like what Matheson brings but if we look at the age group of our core players, it might be a better idea to trade him while his value is high (as Fido suggests).
It's not like we don't have any D prospects in the pipeline. |

the future of the dcore is named Guhle, Rainbacher, Mailloux Hutson... just need a few vets to surround them. trade Matheson while you can get a good return. |

oh I get it, and I'm not against trading him at all if the deal makes sense, but I wouldn't leave it to just one veteran dman (Savard) to support all of the younger guys on the backend, imho you'd still have to find a replacement for Matheson to keep the rebuild go as smooth as possible.

well you said previously guys like Matheson that produce at his rate aren't all that common. how are you going to acquire the same kind of player to replace him without giving any important assets?
unless you're massively downgrading I guess... lol |

I think, in general, we have moved to a place where people present their options as fact and argue on that basis. You know, rather than taking a fact and present their perspective.
We have lost the consensus of facts, and inflated the worth of perspectives. - Mashadar

I never said I wanted to replace by the same type of player!!! I said the contrary in fact. I said the future of the dcore is named Hutson, Rainbacher, Guhle, Mailloux... just need a few good vets to surround them, not necessarly top dmen, just good vets. sign a Savard #2 if you want.

oh whatever
I'm not in your head dude, part of having a hockey conversation (or any conversation really lol) is trying to understand the other person's perspective..

In a year from now, we could be in a very different situation contract-wise.
After years of cleaning up the " balance sheet" left by the previous management, we could be in a position to " invest" for better assets.
Also look at the plethora of picks we have in the next 2 drafts ... and then we only have our own picks in the subsequent 2025-26 season.
Everything seems to indicate that summer 2025 will be eventful.

interesting times ahead indeed. can't wait to see what moves the habs will pull off around the draft.
also I'm looking at the eastern conference and I really don't find the competition is all that high, for the moment at least. it wouldn't take that many moves to put them in the mix almost right away...
and winning the lottery would be amazeballs lol. |
