For me it is not the benching. It was the circus around the situation with Torts refusing to speak to the media. More egregious is they knew he was dealing with multiple injuries and still playing him 20 mins a night. All the while he is just getting back from a two year hiatus. - Flyfly
Sure, he should have owned it. Be accountable. But do I care? Not really. They came out and got 5 of 8 points against elite teams. Whether it was inspite of Torts or not doesn’t matter. |

What I am surprised about is how many people hate the guy after a decade of watching the inmates run the asylum and players play a checked out brand of hockey. And using press conferences as one of the reasons is beyond silly.
He’s not perfect. Far from it. But I’ve watched enough crap and underachieving the last few years to appreciate what this team had accomplished.
I know that is not the opinion of everyone here and I respect that. But I didn’t lose sleep over Coots being scratched and the coach walking away instead of bashing the pitiful performance (again) of the backup goalie. - Flyers1218
I can respect that! He has done some really good things but I just disagree w/ the way he managed Couts minutes and benching. He talks about accountability all the time yet it never really seems to apply to himself.

The thought of Tortorella moving into management is terrifying. - MJL
Really no justification for it. If he doesn’t want to coach or they don’t want him to coach, good luck elsewhere. |

Sure. That’s absolutely fair.
I would hope Danny said something to him after he had to come out and make a statement. |

We’ve talked about this. I already know what you’re going to say. And that’s fine, that’s your opinion.
I’m happy with what has transpired this season and I’m happy with how they have played. He deserves credit for that. |

I’d hate it. Have him coach or fire him. - Flyers1218
Really dont want torts making personnel decisions, we would have a team of grinders who tries to win games 2-1.
No thank you, Both torts & lappy should go. I would do lappy first.

I get it, it's nice to see the team competitive. I'm looking for more.

I can’t argue with you.
I’ve had smaller expectations. I wanted to see effort. I wanted to see them become tougher to play against. I wanted to see them become a better defensive team. And I wanted them to somehow get another first round pick at the deadline.
If I saw all those things I’d have been pretty happy. The fact that they might make the playoffs? That’s like gravy.
It also shows how far gone this franchise was, imho. |

I was old enough to watch 88 in his prime.
Human highlight package for sure but he wasn't always dialed in to the game.
Selfish and a distraction too which made it hard for him to elevate his teams the way Mario, Foppa and Nik did. - Tomahawk
I think Lindros just wanted to be one of the guys. I think guys like Mario and Gretzky were driven to be more. I dont know how to explain it, but, to me, prime Lindros is still greatest hockey player I've ever seen. Size, skill, aggression. He was pure hockey. In hindsight, I think it probably would have worked out better for the Flyers and for Lindros if he had never come to the Flyers, but man it was glorious watching him while it lasted. |

For short term vision, all of that is great. Lets check back in a couple of seasons and see where it leads. This franchise is still pretty far gone in my opinion.

Lidstrom was quietly generational IMO. - Tomahawk
I’m not gonna die on that hill. When he came on the scene he wasn’t generational but certainly played that way. Ovi is but it’s more the goals overshadowing anything else he did by a long shot. He will probably be the all time goal scorer but outside of that he resembles Matthews as a generational goal scorer.Matthews has to keep doing it but I could see him getting there.

As usual for Philly's superstars he did not have another bonafide star to play with. Mario had Jagr. Foppa had Sakic. Nik had Yzerman and the Russian pipeline of players.
I just wish Eric would have shied away from the physical play sometimes.

Gretzky period of dominance was before I was really watching hockey. I started watching in earnest around 1992. - MBFlyerfan

That was NOT gratifying.
I understand Torts not wanting to dissect this game publicly.
He didn't need to comment on it at all.
It was TOO obvious. - Pompous
Right way to handle it (half-heartedly or not): "It wasn't his night. The effort was there ."
Wrong way to handle it: Shrug, tap the podium, walk away. |

He had hand surgery. Of all the things that one could question, debate or second-guess of late, wearing cast after surgery isn't one. |

I'm surprised you don't realize his team isn't any better than 19-20, 17-18, 15-16, 13-14, 11-12, etc. |
