Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Jack St. Ivany has progressed from just hoping not to fall on his pregame rookie lap to earning praise and more playing time from coach Mike Sullivan.

It’s a nice progression for the solidly built and steady stay-home defenseman who has a prized gift among defensemen: a right-handed stick.

“We’ve really liked this game. He’s a mobile guy, defends really well, he’s got a good stick, (and) he’s been helpful in the penalty kill. He thinks the game pretty well,” coach Mike Sullivan said. “He’s defending the rush particularly well with his mobility and his stick. We’ve liked his game. That’s why we’ve kept him in the lineup. He’s a guy who’s worked extremely hard to get to this point and is helping us, so we’re really pleased with his progress.

“We’ll see where it goes.”

Sullivan isn’t one to dole out too much praise, especially for a young player who has not yet played five NHL games, but the coach’s words don’t matter as much as his actions.

Ironically sounds like a player that Torts might have liked haha.

its one thing to analyze a situation and give a take and have others confirm it, ala Coots being run into the ground and hitting a wall and having DB confirm it weeks later. BUT its a completely different sense of delusion to listen to a podcast and take what someone else says

I use viable sources. I gave the credit that said it (Andy Strickland) who is close buddies with Berube and the things he said make sense (that Jonesy and Berube are still good friends from their playing days). I don't know where the rumor about Torts going upstairs came from, but that's been around for awhile. A also parroted about Mitch Marner being out with a sprained ankle against the Flyers when no one else on here knew that. Turns out he missed both Flyers games with that sprained ankle. Thanks!

I'm going to tell you right now, what they're going to build. Unless they get very lucky in the draft. This is going to be another version of a team stuck in hockey purgatory. Not good enough to contend and too good to get the high draft picks to acquire elite talent. Capped out and trying to escalate and wheel and deal their way there. With Tortorella, an archaic dinosaur., a neophyte and inexperienced GM and an unqualified POHO who Tortorella has in his back pocket. The chances of them accomplishing what scarce few have in the modern cap era, are slim to none.

Oh, and speaking of McDavid, we can ask the Oilers how they feel icing a team with both McDavid and Draisaitl and yet are only 8 points ahead of the Flyers in the standings and are not serious cup contenders.
