Then I shouldn't expect to see any posts from you about the current team. Since you don't care? It's current events that rule the day, correct? The team is in a hunt for a playoff spot and he is the current coach. There is plenty in the media about his recent comments made with the teams swoon and somehow you're confused about why posters are currently discussing Tortorella? I also think you misunderstand the influence he has and could potentially have in the future. It's a real possibility that Tortorella moves into an upper management position once he is done coaching here. I personally think that will be detrimental to the Flyers future success. - MJL

Haha yes indeed! I just checked out the clips. The fans seemed so disappointed and outraged at those neanderthals and their goonish behavior

Now that we are discussing the future, I think Tortorella’s influence would be minimal at best. He would be a media mouth piece they send out for some attention. I don’t subscribe to the idea that Briere is Tortorella’s puppet. |

If Tortorella moves into the front office as an advisor, that's not a position that talks to the media. He won't be the GM and he won't be the POHO. It is highly unlikely that Tortorella would take a position of minimal influence. His ego won't accept that. There is no idea that Briere is Tortorella's puppet. The idea is that Tortorella has influence over Keith Jones. Hilferty has called Tortorella the spiritual leader of the team. Briere is either on board or is outvoted. |

I don’t think Tortorella has influence on Jones but that Jones sees hockey a lot like Tortorella. Hilferty is smart enough to know that Tortorella is the current face of the franchise until Michkov or someone of his level gets here. At best he is another voice in the room but how can he damage the franchise? His influence would be at best with player assessments. Do you think he would recommend a trade of a 1st line talent for a fourth line grinder honestly? |

The home game on the 16th against Washington will possibly be the cheapest playoff-like game you’ll ever attend, whether you’re rooting for them or against them. Tickets are available for under $40. |

If Jones sees hockey as Tortorella does, then he has major influence over Jones. With Jones being a neophyte in NHL management. Not just player assessments but also in style of play, vision of how to build a team. He may not recommend a trade of a 1st line talent over a 4th line grinder but his idea of what a 1st line player is what type of player you should build a team around is not a fit for the modern day NHL. He has missed badly on a lot of talent and favors a certain type of player. Tortorella moving into management will be a disaster for this franchise and set them back years.

What talent did he miss (Zucarello)? Is it more than the talent he recognized for good (Atkinson) or for bad (PLD)? Tortorella absolutely has blind spots but he also has positives no one ever wants to mention. |

That's not true at all. His positives are often mentioned. What he's done here. His ability to get a team to buy in and install structure defensively. That is the limit to his coaching though. It's an offensive attack league. While his systems and style of play can make a team competitive. He can't get a team to the next level. Even with quality talent. He coaches a system and style of play that was successful 20 years ago but not now. He has no idea how to coach offense or the PP. Then when you factor in the poor talent development, his unprofessional tendencies as well as an over reliance on intangibles. Simply not the right guy to be the leader of your franchise is 2024. Make no mistake about it. He is the leader and main influencer.

It would be impossible for the NHL to reduce the number of games. They would not survive financially. - MJL
Not true at all. Reduce the players salaries. The scale would still be the same. they could drop down to like 70 games and be financially fine. The cap always for player /revenue split. But they Absolutely could reduce the games.

Tortorella is burning the boats in an attempt to get the Flyers into the playoffs this year. I don’t know why anyone has a problem with this. He’s using every bullet this year and will have nothing left for next season meaning his tenure is almost up. Everyone should be happy - psuhockey
This 💯
Even if you hate Torts, he is giving an out to fire or move him into a management position if they don’t get into the show. POs or bust. You gotta love it with 6 games left and where they are right now. |

So what happened with Moneyball? Billy Beane put together a good regular season team that made it the playoffs and faltered. Does that sound familiar to anyone close to the Hurricanes? |

My predictions, Penguins keep on believing and beat the Capitals tonight, Islanders move into a tie with the Flyers for 3rd place. Same points in the same number of games, so same point percentage |

The Red Sox adopted money ball and tried to hire Billy Beane. Beane refused to leave and the Red Sox won the world series using his system 2x without him. All of baseball now uses it to some extent. Baseball stopped hiring as many explayers who played for the team and started hiring more guys who knew the math.
Does any of that ring a bell? The Flyers are the dinosaurs who still hire exclubbers.
There is nothing wrong with the system. In baseball the big money teams that didn't adapt fell behind and those that did, flourished. You neglect that Beane's team had to innovate because they were a cash poor team, the Canes are on a budget. Once the teams with cash started using his system the advantage went away.

That is absolutely a false narrative. I live in Boston so I know. The Red Sox won the World Series not on the backs of bargain basement, defective players, but on genuine hall of famers like Pedro Martinez, Kurt Schilling, Manny Ramirez and of course Big Papi!Theo Epstein was the GM of the Red Sox in 2004 and working with Larry Lucchino had good balance between the nerds and the experienced old school executives. This is why that team was so successful, because of its balance. Baseball went so far the other way it pretty much ruined the game. Epstein, after retiring and watching the game, realized that pure analytics had killed the game and has been working over the past few years to right the wrongs. I don't want to see hockey make the same mistakes as baseball.
And though he was a dufus, one of the good things Fletcher did as GM was attempt to build out a real analytics department for the Flyers and Briere has talked about how they are now part of the decision making process on team in regards to trades and players. As long as there is balance, analytics has a role. |

You are just doing this for clicks, right? You don't really believe this is how everything works?
Regarding Fletch, he used the analytics for the age chart and player trade value app and not much else. His lack of proper use of analytics was widely mocked. How soon we forget.
Here's how you build an analytics staff : https://theathletic.com/2...largest-analytics-staffs/
Hard to believe a Philly native who went to Wharton and interned under Howie Roseman wasn't hired by the Flyers but at the time they were looking at people to do age charts instead of real analytics work.
Analytics still hasn't reached ice level or ND wouldn't be playing among other questionable decisions. As far as the front office goes, talk is cheap. Fletch talked up the analytics dept while sidelining them so we'll see.

I agree analytics completely ruined baseball. It is almost unwatchable for me now. All about homeruns and exit velocity. Its boring. I try to stay with it but its not the game I loved as a kid.
I do, however, love what analytics has done for hockey. Its made it faster and more skilled. More concentration on skating and speed, less plodding apes on skates. Yes, there is still a place for big physical players, but they better be able to move or else they will get left behind.
