I think some of it had to do with the Rangers not starting on the same intensity level as the Isles, which largely is why Laviolette tried to manufacture emotion for the next game. By the second period the Rangers had picked up their game while, as you say, the Isles may have laid back a bit. The Isles are doing a much better job of playing positionally & clearing defensive rebounds right now, but a lot of other issues like bad turnovers continue to be a concern.
