Again, plus / minus is a stupid archaic stat that is not really indicative of anything.

It indicates a problem, but does not tell you what the problem really is, beyond a simplistic score more goals or allow less goals... is it 5v5? is it PK? Is it PP? Is it your bottom lines? Is it your defensive zone coverage? Is it turnovers? Is it below average goaltending / too many soft and easy goals let in? Is the number inflated (or deflated) by several blowouts? etc....

So yeah, there is a problem.

What the problem actually is cannot be tied to a positive or negative goal differentials.

The Avs scored the most goals this season, but have let in the 17th most goals. Is that bad? Or good?

And again, if a team wins 50 games by an average of 1 goal and loses 32 games by an average of 2 goals - are they a good team, even with a negative goal differential? They are a 100 point team.

Sure seems like a damn good sign to me ... again, the stats tell the story whether you like it or not.

14 out of 16 teams in the playoffs have positive goal differentials while those out are over 90% (if not more) negative.

You can argue all you want but the numbers tell the story.

I did read it ... I base my beliefs on verifiable numbers, not someone else's opinion on the internet.

Just having a good old fashion argument about stats ... those who believe them and those who dont. No big deal.

i didn't see how it started so i'm not naming names or anything, but a lot of guys in this thread just can't pass up an opportunity to disagree. it seems like there can be different reasons for this, but there are always constant disagreements going on.

i see things i disagree with in this thread and others all day long but i don't feel the need to actually go disagree with that person. it doesn't do any good.

And apparently, people who do not understand that non-directional statistics do not result in directional assessment/answers.
