I do not think playing Sorokin was a horrible idea. I have more issues with some of the other lineup choices.

I was good with Ishakov coming in to possible add a bit more speed and skill, yet the opted for Martin. I don't think anything else would have helped.
I'm afraid that it's really not about interchangeable fringe players at this point. The real issue is aging, undersigned players who occupy major roles on the team. So you can put Bolduc or Salo in for Bortuzzo, but that won't change the fact that guys like Pelech & Pulock are getting waxxed all game long.

Martin is just a sinkhole at this point. Holmstrom would have been a better option and Ishakov would have been worth the gamble also. No perfect options obviously, but Martin is a known quantity and that quantity is a big fat zero.

Exactly! When a team owns you for years, you try anything and Holmstrom and Ruslan at least bring some speed and skill. Martin is done.

He's definitely not a defensive specialist, but the Islanders have precisely zero offense from the blueline outside of Dobson and he's a good QB for PP2. No doubt he's a 3rd pairing defensemen and they all come with flaws of some sort, but I was really very impressed with his play this season given who/what he is.

I'd still like to see what Bolduc brings playing every game. He has good size and seems to have some offensive promise.
