Elite goaltenders don't score goals.

Sure look at Boston & how many goals they have scored in the 2 games they won, now compare that to Toronto's goal scoring.

The Leafs have lost 2 games and scored 1 goal in the first loss 2 in the second.

This is a much bigger issue than goaltending.

I don't think there is one team who scored 2 or less goals in a playoff game so far this year.

If Toronto could score goals on the types of shots Boston scores with, we'd be getting more than 2 goals. Have you seen the chances that Swayman is stopping? Samsonov would have allowed at least 6 goals where Swayman allowed none.

At this point I'm just looking for a goalie who is better than league average - because the crap that Samsonov allows is deflating.

The Leafs have scored more than 2 goals only once in their last 10 playoff games. And that was the win against Boston on Monday.

discouraging for a team built around high offense. I guess that's the big difference between playoffs and regular season, a lot less space and time for fancy offense.

3-1 and 3-2 were the lowest scoring games, still needed 3 goals to win. Not sure about previous years but probably not uncommon for the 1st round. I would expect things to get tighter in the next rounds

I don't honestly know.

Woll doesn't appear to have fully recovered from his ankle injury, Samsonov doesn't seem confident enough and Jones sucks too much. I mean yesterday was a 1-goal game and that goal by Frederic was just atrocious.

It was the "1 soft goal per game" that led to us moving on from Potvin no matter how much we liked him, he had reached the point where he was a problem. This year it feels like Sammy is sort of that same problem.

To me . . . he's still pretty good but it just feels like his rebound control is way worse than last year, his body language is definitely a problem, and his sort of . . approach, for lack of the appropriate wording, is worse. As in . . . to me, I find Sammy swimming a lot more this year in the crease than last year - something we all noticed Andersen doing in his last year here, which was problematic as well. That all said, he still made 30 saves on 33 shots which is statistically fine.

Woll had been pretty inconsistent after returning from the injury . . . I guess, if I were Keefe, it would be up to the goalie coach to tell me if he thinks Woll, in practice, is looking better than Sammy right now. Confidence is king. Who's the king?

I remember when I actually debated with some around here that Boston's goaltending wasn't that much better than the Leafs.

Don't worry, it wasn't everyone. Most of you were agreeing with me.

Yep - that was what I meant and I forgot to add the 'haven't won a game' - I edited the original post.

If you can't score 3 or more (so far this playoffs) you aren't winning the game.

I saw Samsonov save 2 or 3 breakaways last game and make a save in the first period early that most goalies don't get to so if we are using that logic Boston should have had what 6 or 7 goals.

Boston is riding super hot goaltending but not every team who is winning has that and it's pretty unpredictable what goalie is going to go on that heater - look at even BOB last year. Stunk to high hell in round one and then went full god mode in round 2.

I'd love to have the goaltending Boston is getting right now but the reality is it's lighting in a bottle and if your team is built right and guys who are paid to score do so you shouldn't need that level of goaltending to win in the playoffs - at least that's what I'm seeing from teams who are winning games.

Jets win and Hellybuck gives up 6.

Kings beat the Oilers last night and Talbot gives up 4 and they were not all good goals.

Rangers give up 3 and win vs Caps.

Good to great teams overcome the odd soft goal - I'm not sure why Leafs nation thinks that our team shouldn't be able to do the same, especially when it's mixed in with a whole bunch of great saves / stops on often sure goals.

I guess blaming the goalie or pining for the other goalie is just the easy path to explain a loss.

I guarantee you none of the Leaf players blame Sammy for that loss last night and I sure as poop hope he doesn't blame himself.

BTW in his last 2 games he was better than 'average' with a .931 and a .909 save %.

Let's say he doesn't give up the softie last night but gets beat on the early great save and 1 or 2 of the breakaways. Is the end result not worse?

Seconded except I'd be willing to consider Lilly coming out but not sure for who. Is Timmons an option? Lilly looks way too rattled and nervous to me.

And the best (regular season) playmaker.

If both those guys were those same things but in the playoffs this team would likely be up 2 games to 1 or better and they wouldn't miss Willy as much as they clearly do right now.

Are you saying it's time for the Leafs to put in a scrub and have him run Swayman and fall on his accidentally / on purpose a few times?

lol

The Leafs need to just get more bodies in front of Swayman (or Ullmark) and not let them see anything - Boston is doing a much better job of this as you see lots of shots from the point Sammy isn't even seeing or seeing at the very last minute.

Leafs also need to be better at clearing out the front of their own net.

The more 5 on 5 the Leafs can play the better their odds are of winning the games / series. Special teams have been for them.

going to the dirty areas....not sure this team can do it constantly, not the top 6 anyway.

The one thing I noticed last night was pretty obvious. The Bruins hunt whoever has the puck immediately which shows the leafs offensive players need time and they’re not getting it. All Boston does is wipe the timing the leafs players have with the puck down to next to nothing and it’s hurting the leafs… badly.

Without an elite goaltender, or a goaltender on a heater, I don't think this team can win with it's current makeup.

Look at Boston: two elite goaltenders or at least a defense-first disciplined hockey club of lunchpail warriors making them look better than they are.

Not a lot of standout award show talent there beyond Pasta, but they could go deep just based on how they play.

I mean on paper they look like a bubble/lottery team!

- gravyface

I really believe they need better dmen and a whole new coaching staff, keefe and everyone has to go.

But we'll see. Its only 2-1 in the series. The leafs can still win.

Oh and the leafs dont score enough in the playoffs
