That can be a blessing like when Johnny Gaudreau was available. While it was embarrassing that the Flyers couldn't afford to be in the running for someone who wanted to play for the Flyers, signing him would've been one of Fletchers many bad decisions.
I tend to see it as a good thing that the Flyers can't afford to make a splash this year in FA, even if it is because Briere now capped them out. - Flyers_01
they could have afforded him, it was a rare occasion good move by chuck , as he didn't want to sign him.
I don't think the Flyers will have many options. The Flyers cannot trade Atkinson, not after the injury and the season he just had. No team is going to take him even if the Flyers covered the max 50% of his final year. The Flyers can send him down and bury him in the minors, but that would be a very poor reflection on the team and the team would only save about $1M in cap space. The Flyers really cannot expect Atkinson to play on their team next season, not after all the scratches and subpar play this year. Thus the only option is to buy him out and save $3.5M this year in cap space, while allowing Atkinson to maybe find a role on a team at the veteran minimum. I don't blame the Flyers for this, nor do I blame the player. This is just an unfortunate end for a good player that got significantly injured. - jd250
that us such BS. why is it a poor reflection? - hello it's me 2050
Because it's disrespecting a veteran player that has tried his butt off to get back into the dance after what could have been a career ending injury. Players see how other players are treated, and the Flyers have been very good at making sure they treat players well.
summary for those that don't want to listen. - hello it's me 2050
It's only 5 minutes .. I think you can handle it. But my summary .. Quitter is a weaselly, entitled wiener that needs to get his head taken off the first time he has the guts to play against the Flyers.

lol stop with that nonsense. It will not have any negative effect to anyone who may want to sign with the flyers. $$$ talks holmes.
it is disrespecting the other members of the team by plying him over someone who can contribute more.

Gave it a listen.
So 2 guys who have no idea what really happened is now fact. Nothing but pure speculation from them, not 1 hard fact to back it up. all speculation.
So the organization spin makes them come out in a good light. This is all a 1 sided opinion piece. Really nothing to see here.
whats the back story? jakie didn't like the reporter criticizing him? - hello it's me 2050
The backstory: During the 2019-20 season, Vigneault was critical early in the season of the veterans on the team -- Giroux, Voracek, JVR, etc. -- and said during a media availability session (which was done in the dressing room back then) that he needed more from them on the ice. It was the "I love the people, I need more of the hockey players" day.
While AV was speaking, on one side of the room, Voracek and JVR were having an amiable conversation on the other side. No one thought anything of it, except apparently Mike.
In the next day's newspaper, Mike wrote a column saying something like "Voracek and JVR were laughing behind Vigneault's back as he talked".... which was such a gross distortion of the reality that not one other person felt that what Mike wrote was accurate or fair. I should add that it was part of a larger column that did a hatchet job on Voracek.
Jake was pissed off; not about the negative article on the whole, but the "laughing behind the coach's back part". He had every right to be angry. He wanted to pull aside Mike the next time he was in the room, tell him off privately, and then it would be over and done. But Mike didn't come around again the rest of the 2019-20 season, and Voracek felt it was basically a hit-and-run.
The pandemic happened. During the belated 2020-21 season, all interviews were done via Zoom. The Flyers opened the season with B2B home games against the Penguins in empty-arena games. After the second game, Voracek and Konecny did postgame from the podium. Mike directed a question to Jake, and got the response on the video about him being a weasel.
Mike has always maintained that he wasn't implying that Voracek and JVR were laughing specifically about what AV was discussing to the media but, rather, that they didn't seem too concerned about how they, or the team was playing (or something to that effect).

The Flyers absolutely have another option but most likely don't have the stomach for it.

I think it's 100% true and I really want someone to take his head off next season when he plays the Flyers, if he even has the guts to play. - jd250
I frankly don’t care what happens to him. I don’t wish injury or anything like that to a kid. Lol….I’ve said from the start that the maturity of the Kid and the lack of professionalism from his agent and the kids parents was astounding. It sucks because the Flyers really need kids like this. I may be in the minority….but I think Drysdale will pop in the next two years and make the trade a little more even.
