I saw this while watching the Dodgers hammer the Mets. Not a great night for action. Holy Trinity never had a prayer!

Goal: Reg: Evanoff (26 shots, 21 saves), Man: Holt (30 shots, 27 saves)

All three CW Friday night games were decided by three goals, including the two match-ups between top contenders. Of note for the Bisons, they (finally) had six regular defencemen dressed, all of whom had a fair amount of ice time. Here’s how they aligned:

MANITOBA
Goal:
31 Holt (30 Thornton)

Defence:
15 Bonni - 4 Malchuk
8 Toth - 25 Calder
5 Casey - 24 Wareham

Forwards:
9 Alarie - 18 Hooker - 11 Ostir
23 Lane - 19 Arpin - 28 Behun
20 Zaplitny - 22 Stotts - 17 Bruce
14 Zimmerman - 12 Trimble- 26 Boucher

Scratches:

REGINA
Goal:
39 Evanoff (35 Fellner)

Defence:
4 Reimer - 3 Third
20 Holoien - 22 McNutt
7 Sass - 28 Heward

Forwards:
18 Whyte - 11 Runke - 27 Barlage
8 J Brook - 23 Pearce - 19 Bjorklund
17 McMillen - 12 Houk - 37 Belitsky
9 Shindle - 44 Friedt-Mohr - 21 Borysiuk

Scratches:
G: none
D: 5 Fishley - 16 Schmidt
F: 14 Culling - 15 Kesslering - 23 Pearce - 24 Wills - 32 Steele

This game was peculiar in that the Bisons built a big lead whilst being outshot, and then they started to dominate the game without scoring.

Hayden Ostir made it 1-0 after 20 seconds, then Skyler Bruce made it 2-0 after 1:37. Codey Behun made it 3-0 on the Bisons’ 5th shot of the period. (I hasten to add that the period shot totals are usually revised at the end of the period.)

The Banjo-Cats rallied in the 2nd period. Their pressure gave them an early PP. However, Behun scored his second goal of the evening shorthanded when the Kittens were farting around in their slot and turned the puck over. This is something they did at least four times in the game. However, they recovered and scored on that same PP to make it 4-1, and then 34 seconds later to make it 4-2. There was no more scoring for the rest of the period, which (oddly) saw the Bisons rack up most of their shots on goal.

Riley Zimmerman (reunited on the line with Trimble and Boucher) put one in on a goalmouth scramble to start the 3rd. This gave the Bisons a 5-2 lead, quickly dashed to a 5-3 lead when Banjo-Cat Payden Bjorklund scored his 2nd of the game less than two minutes later. From there on in, the Bisons were on cruise control until an empty-netter put it away.

One of two goals by Behun

Goal: Sask: Ross (37 shots, 33 saves), Alta: Kruger (32 shots, 30 saves)

The Evil Monkeys needed to beat one of the contenders to prove themselves, and that they did. The Banjo-Mutts had 19 skaters and two goalies in their LeagueStat line-up. Is this a misprint or is this a reply of the failure-to-count issue which cost Banjoland a Grey Cup? Rookie Monkey Brett Hyland had a hat-trick, giving him 5 bananas and 3 apples so far.

After sweeping UBC to start the season, Bedrock U now has three straight losses. Granted, all of their games have been against top contenders. Of note, the Dinos had just skaters dressed for the game.

Goal: TWU: Sommer (40 shots, 35 saves); UBC: Mirwald (24 shots, 22 saves)

Due to the timing of things, I was able to see some of this late game. I missed the 1st period, where the T-irds outshot Holy Trinity by 18-3, and outscored them 4-1. The rest of the game was 1-1, with shots 22-21 in favour of the T-irds. So maybe the Spartans are showing some progress. From the parts I saw, they weren’t half bad. It seems I must pay attention to roster size this year. Trinity was one man short. UBC therefore gets the sweep, but there are still oodles of questions about their team.

October 19, 2024: BISONS ALMOST WIN A TERRIBLE GAME

Quick Summary
Reg: T. McMillen (02:08 1st) , T. McMillen (08:13 1st) , E. Houk (13:44 2nd) , J. Brook (18:13 2nd) , C. Whyte (13:28 3rd) , C. Belitski (19:55 3rd)
Man: C. Behun (09:49 2nd) , E. Toth (05:13 3rd) , S. Bruce (07:34 3rd) , E. Alarie (12:29 3rd)
Goal: Reg: Evanoff (23 shots, 19 saves), Man: Holt (36 shots, 31 saves)

The Banjo-Cats must have sensed that this was a must-win game for them. Starting 0-4-0 against Manitoba and MacEwan may have buried them. That explains why they came out like gangbusters. The explanation for the Bisons coming out lethargic is hard to explain. For reasons I do not understand they shuffled two forwards (Trimble and Boucher out, Paulhus and Sutter in) which caused their 3rd and 4th lines to be shuffled.

MANITOBA
Goal:
31 Holt (30 Thornton)

Defence:

REGINA
Goal:
39 Evanoff (35 Fellner)

Defence:
7 Sass - 28 Heward
20 Holoien - 22 McNutt
4 Reimer - 5 Fishley
16 Schmidt

Forwards:
18 Whyte - 11 Runke - 8 J Brook
24 Wills - 37 Belitsky - 12 Houk
17 McMillen - 23 Pearce - 19 Bjorklund
32 Steele - 27 Barlage

Scratches:
G: none
D: 3 Third
F: 9 Shindle - 44 Friedt-Mohr - 14 Culling - 15 Kesslering - 21 Borysiuk

Regina also made a lot of changes, whether these were by choice or by chance I cannot say.

The Bisons trailed 4-1 after two periods, and then stormed back in the 3rd to tie the game. It was quite a turnaround, and it seemed that Regina was spent. However, d-man Brandon Casey fell at the left point as the Bisons were going after the winning goal. This gave Kade Runke a clean break. However, Casey dove from his knees to trip Runke. However, the Kittens were still on the attack and scored to regain the lead with less than 7 minutes left. An empty-netter was the cherry on top.

Oddly, this series is the only split series after three weeks of regular season CW play.

Second verse, same as the first. The Evil Monkeys have found their form. The PP was the difference. The Monkeys were 2-for-5 and the Banjo-Mutts were 0-for-4.

This is a key series for both clubs. It looks like they will be battling Regina for 3rd place and the final playoff berth in the CW East. For the Bisons, the issues are blueline health and whether they will continue to shuffle the forwards. Oddly, while they shuffle forwards, they never rotate goaltenders. Holt has been okay in starting all four games, but Thornton is at least as good. The Family Guys look decent at times, and shaky at others. So this should be interesting.

The Banjo-Mutts were riding high until the Evil Monkeys took them down a notch. Now, they have their second straight weekend against an unbeaten opponent. This could be the feature series of the weekend.

Bedrock U has had the toughest schedule in the CW thus far. They started by sweeping the T-irds but then lost twice each to Sask and MRU. They need to make hay against the lesser lights now. And nobody is lesser than Holy Trinity. Their AOA number in the OHT35 overstates their season thus far. They are the weakest team in the CW. The big question for the Dinos: How many healthy players do they have? They played two short last weekend.

The Evil Monkeys have recovered from a hum-drum pre-season and have it together now. The T-irds have beaten only Holy Trinity so far. This series could be a big pivot point in the UBC schedule.

➤ MacU: Special teams woes cost Griffins in 4-1 loss to rival Bisons (with boxscore and video)

Quick Summary
Man: R. Stotts (07:36 1st) , J. Hooker (05:15 2nd) , C. Zaplitny (09:57 2nd) , S. Bruce (11:46 3rd)
Mac: C. Cabana (15:41 2nd)
Goal: Man: Holt (35 shots, 34 saves), Mac: Ward (17 shots, 13 saves)

The Bisons needed a win here after losing once to Regina last week. They played a prototypical road game. The key was the powerplay, where they went 2-for-4 to build an early lead. Captain Hooker led the way with one goal and three assists.

Once the Bisons grabbed the lead, they played in a 1-3-1 alignment for the bulk of the remainder of play. This minimized scoring chances for The Family Guys and also minimized the action. Which suited the Bisons just fine. Braden Holt made 34 saves in a solid performance.

Oddly, the Family Guys took the first four penalties, and the Bisons the final five.

Holt makes a save, with Calder’s help.

The Bluegars are looking like the real deal. I didn’t catch much of this one, because it overlapped with the Bison game. From what I saw, the Banjo-Mutts couldn’t have won even if they had several jugs of Granny’s rheumatisz medicine. The penalty numbers were wild. MRU was 2-for-11 on the powerplay (Sask had 47 minutes, including a major, a game misconduct, and a 10-minute misconduct.)

This game was shifted after 5 minutes to a back-up arena, for reasons I do not know. All I know is that the venue change cancelled the live stream. This was a big test for the T-irds, after their sputtering start. They led the Evil Monkeys 2-1 after two periods, but fell apart in the 3rd. The last goal was an empty-netter, and shots were close, so I infer that this was a reasonable game. The PKs were not working. The Monkeys were 2-for-3 and the T-irds were 2-for-5. Hopefully, I’ll be able to watch some of Saturday’s rematch.

Goal: Man: Thornton (37 shots, 33 saves), Mac: Ward (36 shots, 33 saves)

This was a challenging afternoon, as Saturday matinees often are. There was an NHL double-header (games at noon and 3:00 p.m.) and the Bison football team had their regular season finale with first place on the line. (The Bisons beat the T-irds 51-38 in a game the T-irds had to win by 23 points to replace the Bisons in first place.)

Kolby Thornton had his first start in the Bison goal. The Bisons had a 3-2 lead in the 3rd period and allowed a short-handed goal to tie it. Arpin and Calder had their first goals of the season.

Ward foils Zaplitny.

This one looked funny because it had to be played at a secondary arena, after originally being slated for the Father David Bauer Arena (Vancouver edition). It was not really designed for video cameras. In any event, this ended the Evil Monkeys’ 7-0 start to the season, and was a much-needed win for the T-irds, to show they could beat somebody other than Holy Trinity. Monkey Sean Tschigerl had his 6th goal of the season.

This was a pretty good game, on a night when the Bluegars joined the Evil Monkeys as teams no longer unbeaten. MRU had a good edge in play in the 1st period (outshooting the Banjo-Mutts 16-5), but it was still tied 2-2. Thereafter, the game was evan as can be, but the Mutts cashed in on their chances. There was a bit of a brouhaha at the final whistle. However, in the absence of misconducts and major penalties, I would not anticipate any suspensions for next week. Of note, the Bluegars were 0-for-6 and the Mutts were 0-for-3 on the PP.

I mostly overlooked this game due to the smorgasbord of options I had. The Jets on HNIC, the World Serious, and the other CW games overshadowed this one. Since it was the late game, I did see the ending.

Bedrock U had one more player in this game, thus they were only three short. This was also a very chippy game. Still, Holy Trinity seemed determined to put in a good effort and were down just 3-0 mid-way through the 3rd period. They even pulled their goalie on a 3rd period PP but gave up an insurance goal with 8 minutes left. Quite a gamble. They wound up giving up two empty-net goals.

In the four seasons before this one, the Bisons are just 2-11-1 against the Banjo-Mutts, including 0-4-0 last year. The Mutts also won 2-1 in a pre-season game this year.

This year, the Bisons have bolstered their roster. However, the blue line is a bit thin when injuries set in. The Herd has four forwards at or above a point-per-game. In six games, Jonny Hooker is 3-5-8, Riley Stotts is 1-6-7, Skyler Bruce is 4-2-6, and Hayden Ostir is 3-3-6. Meanwhile, the Mutts have just two: Dawson Holet in 8 games is 4-7-11 and Chance Petruik in 7 games is 3-4-7.

In net, the Bisons gave Kolby Thornton is first start last weekend. IMO, it is a good idea to split the starts when teams play Friday night and Saturday at 1:00 p.m. We’ll see.

Meanwhile, the Mutts have thus far started Roddy Ross every Friday and Jordan Kooy every Saturday.

In an interesting stat, the Mutts lead the league with 161 PIMs. Calgary at 145 PIMs and UBC at 119 PIMs are the only other teams in three figures. The Bisons have just 66 PIMs, 6th in the CW.

The T-irds are coming off a split against the Evil Monkeys, whilst The Family Guys split with the Bisons. So now we know that the T-irds can beat somebody other than Holy Trinity or Simon Fraser’s Globetrotters Team. If the T-irds want to be seen as a Tier 1 CW team, they need to sweep a series like this one.

This is the Battle in the Basement. The Banjo-Cats have looked a lot better than Holy Trinity from what I have seen. However, will home ice give the Saintly Spartans a boost? Regina is 1-3-0 against Manitoba and MacEwan, so they must really sweep a series like this to keep their hopes alive.

This was a well-played game, and the Bisons could well have picked up two points. The Bisons led 1-0 and 2-1, and the Banjo-Mutts led 3-2. The Bisons tied the game with just two seconds left to force OT. 3-on-3 OT is not what it used to be. It was five minutes of defensiveness and not any close calls.

The Banjo-Mutts had two preventable game-tying goals. The first one came from a bad attempt to clear when they forgot the old adage “boards and glass will save your @$$”. The second tying goal occurred directly off a face-off caused by a silly icing call. My pet peeve is icing the puck when between your blue line and centre ice.

Holt makes a save.

I never got a chance to see any of this. I followed along while attending the Bison game. It looks like the T-irds have recovered from their early season malaise. The Family Guys blamed Meg for this loss.

I managed to see the 3rd period of this Battle in the Basement. The Banjo-Cats carried the play, but that’s what happens when you are down 4-0. Neither side looked playoff ready in this one.

The Bisons never got any offence going in this one. However, they were organized in their own end and were only down 2-0 almost mid-way through the 3rd period. However, they appeared deflated when the Banjo-Mutts scored on a 4-minute PP. On the night, Sask was 2-for-3 on the PP, and the Bisons 0-for-4.

The Bisons have a bye week next, followed by a home series with MRU.

Goal: UBC: Mirwald (14 shots, 10 saves), MacU: Ironside (33 shots, 32 saves)

Once again, this game overlapped with Bison coverage. Carson Ironside made his CW debut in the Family Guys net, and had a good night. However, fellow rookie netminder Brett Mirwald had a rough night, stopping just 10 of 14 shots.

Goal: Reg: Evanoff (30 shots, 26 saves), TWU: Sommer (35 shots, 33 saves)

IMO, this weekend result kills the hopes of the Banjo-Cats. Holy Trinity played one man short. The score is a bit misleading, in that Trinity’s last two goals were empty-netters. It is very hard for me to imagine TWU catching Calgary, MRU, or UBC, which they must do to make the playoffs.
