Maybe I should cheer for the teams you cheer for all 18 of them. - VANTEL
That’s an excellent mature comeback.
I get your point, however, during the regular season his production and salary makes him currently a slightly underpaid player. So your argument doesn’t hold any water. |

He had one outstanding year only.
Teams build their rosters with money not pokeman cards, so salary matters year round. You paid him to be a scorer not a PK specialist who area lot cheaper.
I can't wait until next year when they are paying him full pop and he produces 70 pts.

Yes he did, however, he’s also had five really good years, including that year, and he’s only 25 years old. He has 412 points in 407 games.
If he has 70 points next year and he’s a good two-way center, I’ll be more than happy with his production. Be nice if they got him some actual top six players to play with.
You know, I’m glad they are forward thinking enough to pay him a contract that will most likely look so good in four years, which is seemingly hard for you to look ahead. I’d rather they pay while the kid is good as opposed to when he’s past his prime. Jonathan Toews cap was 10.5 million a year in 2015 and he’d only had one 76 point season to that point, the rest were in the 50’s and 60’s. He had team success, but he wasn’t a great point producer despite playing with arguably the greatest American to ever play in Patrick Kane.
FYI - the cap was 71.4 million in 2015/16. So 10.5 million was around 14.7% of the cap. |

Not aimed at you but several here pegged Miller to get 70 after he signed his massive increase, the next season he did regress, and now he can do no wrong. And Petey is paid not just for scoring, he is paid to put up points, and play defensive hockey, I like the reference to Marchessault and Toews, it will come.
Personally I am not worried about Petey, and I think must of the criticism here is just guys trying to bait others, except OneSmallBall, he seems bent and really dislikes Petey.

You’re always stuck on money for some reason. He’s not getting paid anything in the playoffs, no one is, they’re playing for free and a championship, they contribute any way they can.
The Canucks are up 2-1 in the series, Petey had a good comeback game after a poor game and you still find a way to complain about him. Your obsession with hating on him has become embarrassing for you. He’s one of the best young centers in the game, perhaps you should cheer for Nashville or Edmonton? - Pacificgem
This is a funny comment coming from someone who constantly calls out Benning's management skills. One of Benning's many flaws was his inability to gauge NHL talent and price it correctly. Poor contracts usually lead to dead cap. Dead cap hinders a team when building a competitive roster.
To the average fan, how an owner spends their money is of no concern. But to enthusiastic fans who are dedicated, focused, and engaged, it should be of interest.
It's just another way of measuring your team's chances of success. Like advanced stats... not overly predictive but it is worth noting and understanding. |

I think Josh Ravensbergen will be the next great Canadian goalie, he came out of nowhere being skipped in the bantam draft, a cougar scout found him and insisted they sign him. He had the Portland shooters frustrated while pitching another shutout. |

Miller was a selfish, defensive liability, POS player when he scored 99 points. His game and maturity level have come around so much since Tocchet arrived. Neither Miller or EP40 are in the MacKinnon class of center, if they play a really good two-way game and score 80 points I’d be more than happy with them. Vegas won the Cup with two top centers that had 66 and 65 points. |

You’re falsely trying to portray that I mean that in a broader sense, I’m speaking about Elias Pettersson’s salary, which he’s been solely complaining about even before he signed his deal.
Pettersson is on an excellent deal if he continues down his current path, when you consider his percentage of the cap and the projected growth of the cap over the next eight years. |

Lefty is making this about my dislike for Petey when it is in fact my dislike for Petey's contract.
EP may or may not have the skill to reach 100 pts again but who are his linemates? I don't think Hoglander and Podkolzin are going to help him come close to that mark. Same as when the Leafs had to let go Hyman because of other huge contracts.
The comparison of Petey to Toews I don't see it at all. Maybe in a few years I will but I don't see any resemblance right now.

The comparison wasn’t style of play, it was taking 8 games to get going in the PO, I think Pettersson contract will age quite well, but what the (frank) do I know, I’m a leafs fan for (frank) sake.. |

Nothing wrong with thinking it will age well. My personal take is long term contracts are a pain in the butt but that is my take.

It’s both, really. You don’t like his style of play, he’s not a power guy, I’m ok with that. However, I take issue with your complaining about something that hasn’t even happened yet. Your whining about the future, which again, hasn’t happened yet, and there’s plenty of information out there available which would suggest Petey’s contract will age well over the life of it.
His production has always been very good, his two-way game is vastly improved as has his faceoffs, the salary cap is expected to rise substantially over the next decade, everything points to it being a very good deal over the life of the contract.
It hasn’t even kicked in yet and here you are again whining about it instead of enjoying the playoffs. |

I’m not the one complaining, also, I’m using NHL reporting, not a “what if he doesn’t score 80 points” mentality.

In other words it is okay for you to make a prediction about the future but no one else can. You have no idea how the economy or if another covid like delay will be in twelve months so all you are doing is guessing just like me.
I think Petey is a good player not the great player you and five others think. Yes I do prefer a power forward. I definitely don't think he is a top center.
I am not worried if he doesn't score 80 points he wont score 70. Not going to happen playing with Hogs and Pod.

I'm using NHL reporting to make a prediction on the cap, I'm not pulling a "what if" out of my behind, what are you using to project Pettersson won't be successful next season and beyond? Clearly it's going to go up unless we head into another world war or another global pandemic.
Petey's scored 259 points in 242 games over the past three seasons, 69-102-89, while also being +37 over that timeframe and becoming a better defensive player. He's never been a minus player. He's 11th in Canucks all-time scoring at 25 years old!!!
Nothing suggests he won't be worthy of that contract for the organization. Truthfully, it isn't even about Pettersson for me, it's about defending the organization who've finally come up with an excellent center they drafted and developed all on their own. The first since Henrik Sedin, who you also didn't like, and he was drafted 25 years ago. |

I thought they were classy talented players. I didn't like how Canucks put all their eggs in one basket centering Canucks entire game around the Sedins. I also predicted back then that it would take a decade for future Canucks management to unravel the mess left behind. It did.
Off the cuff who knows how this screwed up world could look like in a year. Middle East tension, US elections Russia China North Korea Iran all crazy as fu ck and JT |

Two things, the world has always been messed up, if you look back over it's history, there's always been some sort of sh it happening.
Secondly, every successful team goes through a period of a rebuilding process when their star players get older, this is not unique to the Canucks. It just took a lot longer than it should've, but we're there now....thankfully. |

There were people who hated the trade. I know where I and the majority stood on it though. We liked the acquisition but felt they gave up a little too much. Now it can be settled that they didnt give up too much.
I don't think fans should be criticized for it though. Look at our current management for example.... their priority was to sign Horvat and were actively trying to trade Miller at the same time. Both management and Miller openly talked on how they couldn't find a trade partner for the unsigned Miller. In the end, Horvat not budging on his $8mil was the deciding factor on who they were willing to give that kind of money to but it's an open book on them not knowing just how good Miller was going to be until this season obviously or they would have never dreamed of trading him.
In the end, the league didnt know who Miller was going to become and should be kicking themselves in the ass for turning down Van's trade offers. Because of that, management lucked out...
