Marner does like his money. Also, much lower pressure market, the bar is set about as low as it can get. You know Mitch would like that. Wouldn't have to share the spotlight much either.

What player doesnt?

No owner is offering any winger 16m next year.

So he stays, racks up regular season points and shops for best deal next summer.

there's a pretty simple reason which Marner would understand much much better than either Nylander or Matthews.

as the annointed Local Boy made good - the press attention on his every move and comment is only going to ramp up this summer. Of course he's going to be looking to make more money than Nylander - and if Treliving gives it to him - he's nuts.

Plus everyone in Toronto and within the ecosystem knows what the situation is. The attention will be relentless. I'm not suggesting he should be followed around by the media... but he will be - and he'll get a steady stream of "Howard Bergers" who are trying desperately to keep themselves relevant asking ridiculous questions - I'm guessing he choses to spend his lengthy offseason away from Toronto and Ontario.

- BorjeFan4Ever

If you were marner, you would not agree to be move to Utah and then extend for 8 years.
Marner loves the spotlight, hes said it himself.

I would take PLD and Brandt Clark over Marner in a heart beat....and I don't even know who Brandt Clark is.

Throw in the coach and the defenseman Roy and it's a deal.

Hey 50, do we get an "I told you so" moment yet???

In the last 7 years the Rangers have retooled on the fly, Canucks, Florida, as always Vegas, Jets with some big moves! Absolutely NO reason why the Leafs couldn’t do the same! This franchise should be leaders NOT followers.

I'm probably going way out on a limb here but my best guess is that something unprecedented happens and it plays out like this

- he refuses to waive and they can't get a new team friendly deal done
- he crushes the first 3 months becoming every fans favourite (Dozzer buys his jersey)
- Tree signs him to 8 x "something bigger then we all would have guessed"
- he suffers a uncharacteristic lull in production the rest of the year
- fans turn on him (Dozzer hides his jersey)
- he gets a migraine and can't play in the playoffs

Really? 12% less taxation alone would save him damn near $2 mill.

Canadians are adorable when they can’t grasp why players don’t mind not playing in Canada. They earn more, and have a far more private life.

Even at $12.5 mill his taxation up here would be roughly $1.3 million more. It’s why Matthews only gets paid league minimum at 53.53% taxation and gets the rest as a July 1st bonus while living in Arizona at 38.5% taxation.

Tbh I truly wish the league would have everyone’s cheque come out of NY state or something. Stop giving teams in a location with lower taxation a massive advantage.

Wouldn’t matter where the cheques are cut. If you earn income in Canada you are subject to Canadian tax laws (taking into account Canada-US tax agreement).

Even if you’re employed by the league, therefore NY, and not Canada?

Sincere question. I know they’re paid by the game. For instance they only have to pay the Florida taxation when they play a game there. I’ve been sincerely studying to try and learn.

Put him on the 3rd or 4th line with Reeves and Kampf and see how many points he gets to pimp his next contract.

They need to look at the Jets model and see if they can pull off a PL like trade …

Marner somewhere like Utah and get 3 solid guys back - 1 being an up and coming D man and 2 middle forwards like Vilardi and Iafallo… and get a pick along with it …

- dozerD10

I'd rather they make a play for Noah Dobson with the Islanders. He'll soon be looking for a big raise and Lou will probably wants to play games. Lou drafted Marner, so there could be a fit there. The Islanders have a few decent defensemen, but their offense doesn't measure up, in their division. Sorokin could also be part of a multiplayer deal as well.

Even if you’re employed by the league. It’s income tax and therefore based on your income and not where your employer is based.

I’ve attached a pretty good article that explains how Matthews is paid and taxed. It’s based on the $s in his first deal but it shows how the signing bonus system saves him big $.

One complicating factor not addressed in this article is that CRA has been cracking down on tax instruments called Retirement Compensation Agreements that players use to put a lot of their signing bonuses into. JT, and a bunch of players from the Jays have had issues with CRA over this. I don’t know the details but there are rules about how these things are structured and my guess is that the accountants got too cute.

Or…. he decides that there’s a better free agency pay off by staying with the Leafs and running up some big regular season points
- Canada Cup
It won't work so well, if he does that. He might be put on the 4th line with no powerplay time. His numbers would be diminished and his new contract would be less. He'd be smart to take the trade and sign a new larger contract.

Thank you. I’ll read into this for sure.

Essentially what you’re saying is that the CRA is cracking down hard because the agents aren’t even trying to hide anything?

Another question I have is would the league be able to set different caps for each team based on their location? Not that the league would want to, likely not, but could they?
