That PLD trade is universally panned for LA and Winnipeg won it with two top 9 forwards and a degraded prospect.

Saving 500k for a few years pales in comparison to spending that type of coin for 4 more years on an arguably inferior player. PLD could bounce back where Skinner is likely going to continue sliding, but I'm not sure I'd take that risk without 30% or more retained.
