EF (I just listened) said the Core4 days are over (his opinion) ...but it might have to wait until next year (ie. JT) b/c he's not sure what MM and the team will do.

The key leverage for the Leafs (to persuade MM to accept a trade) is the 8th year. No extension from Leafs means Marner would need a trade to get his 8th year.

Yeah he also said they didn’t want to lose a trade with Willy

They are not looking to win a trade here, they would trade Marner for flexibility

How am i not surprised that santos version of what EF said was a little skewed?

I think Marner could do what Kane did in playoffs if he wasn’t so weak mentally
- Santo_44

would also need a toews, Keith and Seabrook. Of which they have none

Boom. Facts matter. The 8th year is key. If there’s a team where he’s ready to commit for 8 years, a trade can happen. The other scenario is if there’s a spot where he can have a better season than in Toronto before he hits free agency.

Where was it skewed ?

He expanded on it and I didn’t see that from the post I saw.

But yeah it makes it even more likely that he’s gone, leafs are the only team that can sign him to the 8th year.

I want Guy Boucher as the Leafs HC

I want Matthews, Marner, Nylander and Tarares to play the 1-3-1

Agreed.
I dont see Marner accepting to go to a non playoff team.
Also, the leafs arent just going to give him away or do a trade for the sake of doing a trade.
But we will see. If he waives, then he'll get traded.
Maybe he was injured throughout the first round, if management knows this (and they would) maybe its not a pressing for them to move him.

Management leaking this now is a PR move to take the pressure off over the next week or so so that fans put the pitchforks away. “We’re committed to winning and will fire the coach and run Mitch out of town.”
- Canada Cup

There was no leaking ....listening to EF this morning ...it was just him speculating about most of the substance. "I think that " .....he even speculated about a JT buyout which, of course, would make absolutely zero sense given that his AAV would still be 10.5M.

And? Of course it might not happen.

Why would he say it’s happening? Based off what he said it’s likely.

Leafs aren’t afraid to lose a deal here, if Marner gives the go ahead he is gone gone gone.

But no shanny leaked it!! According to some senile old man.

Of course it might not happen.

Keefe might not get fired.

But is it likely based on what we know? Yes I think so.

Go believe Marner will be here next year, I don’t.

Ffs duh.

Teams will be fair, but no they aren’t getting what a 100 pt player should get on the open market.

He did, and I remember him saying that before the extension. They dangled 88 last summer to see what was out there but didn't find anything close. With MM, I agree, the need for change (and MM's leverage) pushes them to be open to accepting less than they might otherwise.

The other big factor for me (in terms of moving a big part) is that a guy like Knies needs more time/opportunity to be able to take that next step. No way should that kid be penciled in to the 3rd line. He needs top line and top PP time. And give him an extension before he kills it next year.

EF also said a McCabe extension is high on Tree's to-do list. Good ...

Agreed. I’d be shocked to see him a leaf in the fall.

And yeah Knies needs playing time, Cowan and Minten will push for spots as well.

Agreed on McCabe.
