He did, and I remember him saying that before the extension. They dangled 88 last summer to see what was out there but didn't find anything close. With MM, I agree, the need for change (and MM's leverage) pushes them to be open to accepting less than they might otherwise.
The other big factor for me (in terms of moving a big part) is that a guy like Knies needs more time/opportunity to be able to take that next step. No way should that kid be penciled in to the 3rd line. He needs top line and top PP time. And give him an extension before he kills it next year.
EF also said a McCabe extension is high on Tree's to-do list. Good ... - The Law
Could you reasonably pencil Knies and McMann into the top two left winger spots? McMann probably plays 2nd or 3rd line but Knies is pretty much what they paid Bert 5 million to do.
How much is McCabe worth on an extension? He's currently at 4 million. 5 or 6?

Ya, heard that too. He's a fit in theory ...just not sure if he's good anymore.
I also assume GM's love what they love ..they keep going back to the same well. Tanev makes sense. Parayko is/was a guy Treeliving was rumoured to like.

I just hope we don't keep hearing Pageau + Wahlstrom for Marner all summer long
Pulock + Wahlstrom + conditional 1st 2025 (if they make it the SCF) otherwise it's 2ns round pick for Marner |

McCabe is a beauty, and the best part is we're only paying him $2M. Give him Brodie's money, maybe a bit more.

Someone posted his charts on Twitter.
I mean he has a very difficult role and plays it decently, you wonder how much playing on the hawks skew his stats.
Don’t know if CHI can retain for that long, can’t see the leafs taking on his full 9.5 until he’s 37.
Can they send Jones plus Hall 50% retained?
Can they retain his deal so he goes down to 8M?

If they can find a way to spend their money on a pair of blueliners then I'd be willing to roll into the season with Knies, McMann, Robertson in my top 9. Let the kids play and build confidence and add a winger at the deadline.
I'm guessing McCabe costs 5.5 to 6M on a long term deal. Forsling just did 8 x 5.75 in Florida ..something similar I'd guess. |

I don’t mind it.
Kind of wondering if they can snag Elias Lindholm to a one year deal. |

Probably quite a bit, but some of it is on him as well. Jones is a nice player, who is paid about $1-2M more than he should. He can eat a ton of minutes and his play really doesn't change from the start to finish of a game. The issue is that he's not a standout at any one thing, and he's kinda streaky.
If you put him on a team that has a good set of forwards in place that know how to cover for a pinching D-man and give him a relatively consistent partner (He was really good playing with Vlasic this year), I think anyone would love to have him. I highly doubt that KD would be willing to retain any money on a deal because the Hawks have no urgency to do so, and despite what a lot of Hawks fans say about him, he's still their best defenseman. |

I’m not sure they would ever get a deal done without retaining.
He’s the 6th highest paid D in the NHL….where does he rank? 20-35 range?
RHD so that is a premium position.
Retaining 1-1.5M isn’t really a big deal.
In a world where Mitch would accept a trade to Chicago I think they would be willing to do a lot to get him there and signed long term.
Bedard desperately needs someone to play with as well, the hall trade was a failure. |

Utah is interesting. I could see them wanting to make a splash and being prepared to throw a lot of money at someone. Mitch could be “the guy” but is he prepared to sign there long term? |

That's the beauty. Don't need to and aren't looking to move him, so there is no leverage for him to retain.
Indeed, Bedard does need guys to play on his line, but the GM's whole philosophy is great skater, highly competitive and puck hound type guys, unless there is some over the top attribute that is forces the exception.
Hall was a failure due to health. I wasn't a big fan of the acquisition at the time, but they'll run it back with him and a couple other new bodies next year. The Hawks are pushing for improvement, but I doubt they will sacrifice much to do so. They have an abundance of LHD prospects that look pretty good. Maybe one of them can be included. As long as the Hawks don't win the lottery tomorrow, I'd bet they take one of the D-men in the top 4 picks.
