There are 2 options here and the 2nd one is the clear winner for both Marner and any team looking to add him long term.

If the leafs want to move Marner they absolutely can, with minimal issues.

They can even get a Chicago or the Ducks to retain his cap hit this season for 350K of they wanted to.

People will read whatever they want into that press conference and Im sure there will be so many pages wasted on it in here.

But we'll wait and see what happens. Not gonna pretend to know what happens next.

Of course, the team won't let Marner walk without serious consideration.

It's more about can the Leafs win with Marner gobbling up a significant portion of the cap? Do the Leafs feel like his value is justified at 12M (or wherever the number lands) or would it be better spent upgrading the D and/or goaltending? Or, perhaps, bringing in a significant upgrade on 2C.

Tavares will re-sign for a sweetheart deal so there is certainly some cap savings there, but to me, it's about fit.

They've already made their bed with Auston, Willie, and Morgan. Does Marner fit?

He got asked "do you still believe in them" and he didn't say yes ..in fact he said something along the lines of " you assess that every year and eventually at a certain time considering ages and where they are and patterns of outcomes you assess all of those things further".

That's clear language ....the patterns they've seen are that this Core is not able to get
it done.

Changes ...they're going to try to their best to make them. Keeping in mind that nothing operates in a vacuum ...the change has to be for the better.

Mostly a waste of a presser except for the last two questions from Jonas. Sounds like Leafs mgmt is ready to make a change here but don't want to come out and say if for fear they can't or that it hurts their negotiating position.

Sure sounds like a certain someone will be dealt this summer, if at all possible. That last answer from Shanahan comes about as close to saying the core four is done as you could possibly expect.
